With this production of Francesca Caccini’s 'La liberazione di Ruggerio dall'isola di Alcina', directed by Elena Sartori, an important stepping-stone in the development of 17th-century opera receives a superb new recording from Glossa. For much of her career - Caccini was a composer, a virtuoso singer, a teacher, a poet and a multi-instrumentalist - she worked at the Medici court, and was commissioned by the grand duchess of Tuscany, Maria Maddalena of Austria, to write this commedia in musica for performance in Florence in 1625.

Today's music lovers associate L’Orfeo first and foremost with Claudio Monteverdi’s famous opera from 1607, while the version by Luigi Rossi, premiered four decades later, has remained less well-known. Rossi had served as a musician first for the noble families Borghese and Barberini in Florence and Rome, respectively, before he moved to France in 1646, where he became the most respected composer at the court of Cardinal Mazarin.

In his day, Georg Philipp Telemann was the most famous German composer to compose in all styles and who produced a fantastic number of opuses. Originally forgotten by posterity, then to be written off as a writing maniac, the significance of his works has finally begun to be recognised in recent years. As a protestant, he composed his sacral pieces (e.g. his 1750 cantatas!) in the German language. There are however also a few works in Latin: a magnificat as well as two psalms rendered to music, both of which must have been written for special occasions. On the 250th anniversary of Telemann’s death, Elena Santori and her Allabastrina Choir & Ensemble present an outstanding recording of this magnificent music.

Daughter of the singer and composer Giulio Caccini, Francesca Caccini (1587-after 1641) was not only a singer, harpsichordist, lutenist, guitarist, but also, without a doubt, the first woman to compose operas. Her first known public appearance dates from October 1600, when she was thirteen years old with her father and some other members of her family during the celebrations of the marriage of Henry IV and Marie de Medici. As a young adult, she pursues a full-time career as a full-time court musician with the Grand Duchy of Tuscany and then with Catherine de Lorraine.

Born in Florence, the cradle of the Italian language, Jean‐Baptiste Lulli was the first Italian musician to settle and be fully accepted in France, at the prestigious and illustrious court of Versailles, the centre of refined taste. Lully not only accepted the French style, even more: he created it. His sacred music is splendidly dramatic, the orchestra is full and sonorous, with important roles for the wind and percussion instruments, a feast of colours, driving rhythms and ornaments!

Today's music lovers associate L’Orfeo first and foremost with Claudio Monteverdi's famous opera from 1607, while the version by Luigi Rossi (1597-1653), premiered four decades later, has remained less well-known. Rossi had served as a musician first for the noble families Borghese and Barberini in Florence and Rome, respectively, before he moved to France in 1646, where he became the most respected composer at the court of Cardinal Mazarin. His L'Orfeo, with a libretto by Francesco Buti, was premiered on 2 March 1647 at the Théâtre du Palais-Royal in Paris. It was one of the first operas ever performed in France. The premiere was magnificently staged, full of magnificent sets and machinery, with over 200 people employed to work on the scenery. The performance lasted about six hours and was a great success for Rossi. Twenty years after the first recording by Les Arts Florissants and William Christie, Elena Sartori and her ensemble Allabastrina present now the second recording of this opera. The total playing time is slightly under four hours, almost Wagnerian proportions. Sartori uses exclusively Italian forces (17 solo singers and choristers), with the Baroque experts Francesca Lombardi Mazzulli (Orfeo) and Emanuela Galli (Euridice) in the main roles.

This live recording, from the Huelgas Ensemble directed by Paul van Nevel, is the second version of this early baroque opera to appear within a few months. The first was from an ensemble combining Allabastrina, La Pifarescha and an excellent team of vocal soloists directed by Elena Sartori. I am not in a position to make a direct comparison between the two versions at the moment, but one obvious difference is that the present recording from Van Nevel takes 88 minutes and is spread over two CDs, whereas Elena Sartori’s team manages to squeeze the work onto one disc of 79 minutes.
