Brit guitar hero Allan Holdsworth, ex of the Soft Machine, Gong, U.K., and Bill Bruford and Annette Peacock's solo projects, has been wildly inconsistent when it comes to his solo projects. Completely bonkers for technology, he's employed every gadget he can get his hands on own records, and has gotten results that range from the near sublime to the kind of dross one usually associates with prog excess…

Between the fall of 1962 and the end of 1963, Allan Sherman was perhaps the most popular comedian in America, and along with Bob Newhart he was one of the first to rise to fame through the medium of the long-playing record album. Sherman's gimmick was his gift for taking familiar melodies – folk songs, old standards, hits of the day – and pairing them with new lyrics that turned their original meanings upside down and threw them into a whole new (and very funny) light. Sherman's twin obsessions were Jewish-American culture and the daily outrages that were part and parcel of life in postwar America – from cut-rate clothing and extended families to crabgrass and summer camp, Sherman could point out the foibles of muddling through the Kennedy era and show what was both funny and ridiculous about them.

From Allmusic Guide:

Providing the soundtrack to numerous biker and teen exploitation movies in the mid- and late '60s, Davie Allan & the Arrows bridged the surf and psychedelic eras. Their driving, basic instrumentals featured loads and loads of fuzz guitar, as well as generous dollops of tremolo bar waggling and wah-wah. The guitarist and his band first made their mark with the minor hit "Apache '65," a version of the Shadows/Jorgen Ingmann's instrumental classic "Apache." Hooking up with notorious exploitation movie producer Mike Curb, the Arrows provided the soundtracks to numerous B-movies on the Tower and Sidewalk labels; their greatest success, "Blues Theme" (from The Wild Angels starring Peter Fonda), made the Top 40 in 1967. Curb abandoned racy movies for the Osmonds and purged MGM Records of their psychedelic acts, but the Arrows continued to play and record for various labels during the '80s and '90s. A slew of reissues during the new millennium broadened the group's appeal, and they returned in 2003 with ~ Richie Unterberger

As you traverse the rolling landscape of ‘Hotels And Dreamers’ Allan Taylor draws you in with a richly grained collection of songs to stimulate both heart and head. The terrain is occupied by wise-but-weary vocals, and muted acoustic arrangements which conspire to pay gentle and affectionate homage to “the Beats who started me on this road” and contemporaries who also took this route less travelled…

While electric guitarist Holdsworth retains his signature ultra-legato, speed demon sound, he has added a couple of new wrinkles to this date. He's attempting to play some legitimate jazz standards, a couple of Joe Henderson tunes, and other sidebar items. He's also working with the synthaxe, a synthesizer controller, on three cuts. The most revelatory moments of the date come from the acoustic sounding digital piano of Gordon Beck, a true master whose be-bop chops and inventive solo work cements the legitimate jazz aesthetic into the fiber of this music. Electric bass guitarist Gary Willis (of Tribal Tech) and drummer Kirk Covington work pretty well together, and swing, albeit in a more rock/R&B orientation. Holdsworth has a predilection for stating melodies very briefly before immediately going into a solo. This is most evident during John Coltrane's "Countdown," where he tosses out the theme with nice chords, then rips into his distinctive flowing single 16th and 32nd note lines. Holdsworth is not all flash – he comps frequently and tastefully, as on the well-played Henderson piece "Isotope," getting out of Beck's path as the pianist digs into an aggressive, melody drenched solo….

Guitar legend Allan Holdsworth has had a career that has spanned nearly fifty years and is considered by many to be the guitarists' guitarist and a guitar genius that has created a playing style and sound unlike any other. Holdsworth was inducted into Guitar Player's "Hall of Fame" in 1991, his influence has crossed many genre lines including rock, jazz, and metal. EIDOLON: The Allan Holdsworth Collection is a Double CD collection of 28 songs hand picked by Allan himself from his many solo albums beginning with his 1982 release I.O.U. Also included in this collection is a previously unreleased rare alternative version of "Road Games" with the legendary Jack Bruce on vocals. Trumpeter Jan Allan, who turned 80 years of age on 7 Nov 2014, has performed with the most well-known musicians and singers of the jazz world: Alice Babs, Monica Zetterlund, Stan Getz and so many more. Following their early-2014 tour of Sweden, the Norrbotten Big Band and Jan Allan recorded this double-disc production, Jan Allan 80. According to Joakim Milder, NBB artistic leader, he gave a handpicked and colorful group of composers just got one directive: Think about Jan Allan and write a piece of music. All the composers share a delight in and understanding of Jans trumpet playing.
