A counterculture movement united by an expansive, experimental and deeply soulful sensibility, Japan’s rebel protest music challenged the status quo and changed the country’s music industry in the process.
The birth of Japan’s nascent acid folk scene was rooted in the messy and invigorating political climate of the late 1960s. It is a story of Dadaists, communists, pharmacists and cult leaders, led by a young generation of upstart students, artists and dreamers hellbent on turning their world upside down. Born on the campuses of Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka, and centred around newly formed independent label and left-wing stronghold URC, this uniquely Japanese form of folk expression provided an outlet for musicians who were tired of aping Western sounds and instead found ways to sing in Japanese and integrate traditional forms in new ways. At the forefront of this movement was Yellow Magic Orchestra’s Haroumi Hosono, a polymath innovator whose band Happy End released the first Japanese language rock album, and whose influence would go on to be felt across Japanese music for decades. Alongside, and informed by the Kansai scene’s Takashi Nishioka and Happy End collaborator Ken Narita, they experimented with cadences and accents of the Japanese language to open the door for others to experiment with their own forms of psychedelic folk too.

Three of a Kind is the first eponymous album of a three-headed group comprised of some of the best French Jazz musicians living in New York City, who surprisingly had never really played together before: guitarist Michael Valeanu, saxophonist Jon Boutellier and bassist Clovis Nicolas.

Logan Larson and Logarhythmic Collective is a new music ensemble that brings a raw, loud, and unapologetic approach to their music. Their signature sound is a combination of classical music idioms and the visceral synths and drums of Electronic Dance Music (EDM). "The Monster You Made" has songs ranging from the core trio of voice (Logan Larson), saxophone (Benjamin Morris), and trombone (Thomas McKee) to featured guest soloists, chamber groups, and large ensembles. Guest artists include: University of Kansas Symphonic Band, Mississippi State University Percussion Ensemble, Frye Music Duo, Kyle Pearl, Philip Beatty, Joseph Pazanowski, Wesley Frye, and Daniel Echazabal. This is a creature of your own creation, a monster is born, this is… the monster you made.

Gentiane MG has established herself as an important voice as a Canadian jazz pianist and composer. She made a powerful impression on Montreal’s jazz scene with her two albums for piano trio, Eternal Cycle (2017) and Wonderland (2019). MG is releasing her third album with this ensemble, Walls Made of Glass, on September 23, 2022.
