The multi-talented Freda Payne is best known for her singing career, yet she has also performed in musicals and acted in movies over the years, and was briefly the host of her own TV talk show. Born Freda Charcilia Payne on September 19, 1942, in Detroit, Michigan, Payne developed an appreciation of music at an early age (due to such sultry jazz singers as Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughan, and Billie Holiday). Payne's own musical career blossomed soon after, as she began early singing radio commercial jingles, which brought the young vocalist to the attention of several music-biz heavyweights.

Payne's Window offers further testament to unsung hero Cecil Payne's prowess on the baritone saxophone. Fronting a delightfully swinging sextet that includes pianist Harold Mabern and tenor saxophonist Eric Alexander, Payne delivers a wonderful mixed bag of originals and standards. Window boasts a nonchalant attitude that allows the music to swing effortlessly. On Payne's humorous "James," Mabern improvises on what seems to be "Mary Had a Little Lamb" as Payne, Alexander, and trombonist Steve Davis punch in with swaggering riffs. Payne's impeccable rhythms are still intact, as on the Latin-tinged "Spiritus Parkus" and "Southside Samba," while tunes like "Lover Man" and "That's It Blues" are imbued with bluesy mellowness. Payne's Window is a no-frills record that rewards with each listening.

Though best known for her 1970 smash pop hit "Band of Gold", Freda Payne has always first and foremost been a jazz singer. "Come Back To Me Love" marks not only a return to the big band and strings-laden classics from her mid-1960s beginnings on Impulse! but is also a return to her hometown of Detroit. That makes this album, featuring Grammy winner Bill Cunliffe’s musical arrangements, a beautiful homecoming. Payne sings some of her longtime favourites alongside several original tunes, the music split between powerful big band jazz and classy contemporary pop with strings.

The Payne family moved to Gideon, Missouri, in 1944 and Jimmy enjoyed country music and singing in church. He had a gospel programme on the radio on Saturdays and was picking cotton during the week. In 1957, he moved to St. Louis to work as a professional country singer. He met Chuck Glaser while in the US Army and played guitar with the Glaser Brothers band. Chuck Glaser took over his management when he formed his band, the Payne Gang. He made several singles including ‘Ladder To The Sky’, ‘What Does It Take (To Keep A Woman Like You Satisfied)’ and ‘My Most Requested Song’. He first appeared on the Grand Ole Opry in 1966. He cut several singles including his own composition, ‘Woman, Woman’, which had national success in 1967 when it was recorded by Gary Puckett And The Union Gap. He continued to have only minor success as a solo artist - ‘L.A. Angels’, ‘Ramblin’ Man’ and ‘Turning My Love On’ - but he wrote Charley Pride’s US number 1 country single, ‘My Eyes Can Only See As Far As You’. He wrote the popular title track of his gospel album, Walk With Me The Rest Of The Way, with Jim Glaser. In 1986 he recorded a duet, ‘Ugly Women And Pick-Up Trucks’, with Tompall Glaser. Original recordings date 1968 year. Listen remastered version from high quality.

Jazz / Bop / Hard Bop / Baritone Sax / Flute

At age 72, Cecil Payne makes a recorded comeback with this release. He sounds in fine form, playing with dexterity, clarity, and depth on baritone sax, and brings out his flute for two of the eight cuts. Six of the eight selections are his compositions. A mixed-generation band has old hands John Ore (bass) and the great Harold Mabern (piano) teamed with younger men Eric Alexander (tenor sax) and Joe Farnsworth (drums). Guest trumpeters Freddie Hubbard or Dr. Odies Williams III get cameos. As expected, this is a hard bop date, reflective of Payne's history with Dizzy Gillespie, J.J. Johnson, Tadd Dameron, and James Moody.
