Si Rudi et Bernd sont devenus pilotes de course, c'est avant tout par amour du danger. Dans les années 30, en effet, la ceinture de sécurité est un concept absurde, les immenses réservoirs d'essence sont hautement inflammables, et chaque virage peut provoquer un tête-à-queue fatal ! Mais le pire des périls reste à venir : en 1933, Hitler décide de faire de ces têtes brûlées les nouveaux héros du régime nazi. Le Führer apprendra que l'homme peut dompter les machines, mais pas ses semblables. Dans l'entre-deux-guerres, les courses automobiles étaient un sport extrêmement populaire en Europe. Les courses, spectaculaires et mortelles, attiraient des dizaines, voire des centaines de milliers de spectateurs. Grand Prix retrace l'histoire de ce microcosme au cours des dernières années précédant la Deuxième Guerre mondiale et comment Hitler s'est servi de ce sport pour sa propagande. Il s'agit d'un récit mêlant action, romantisme, danger, voyages exotiques, adultère, humour, boisson, drogue et mélancolie, dans une époque d'espoir, de privation, d'attente, d'insouciance et de menace croissante. Un temps où les gens vivaient simplement au jour le jour, dans l'espoir qu'il y aurait un lendemain.

After all, don't they say: “lightning doesn’t strike every time it thunders”?

The summer of year 1939 was exceptional. On 3 September, two days after the German invasion of Poland, the last “pre-war” Grand Prix is held in Belgrade.

Rudi and Bernd, the heroes of a new trilogy by Marvano, are racing drivers with a love of danger. They’d have to be because, in the ‘30s, seatbelts are an absurd concept, helmets are unheard of, and the huge petrol tanks are highly flammable. Every turn could end in a fatal crash and yet the worst peril is yet to come: in 1933 Hitler will decide to make these hotheads the new heroes of the Nazi regime and the Führer will come to learn that a man can tame machines, but not his fellow men.
