Argerich Lugano

Warner Classics is pleased to release the 12th annual 3-album set of highlights from the Progetto Martha Argerich in Lugano, described in The Times (London), as “community music-making on a deluxe scale, with performers and listeners mutually uplifted by music’s wonders.” The recordings celebrate the musical fruits of a project in which young artists join seasoned performers, including Martha Argerich herself, to explore wide-ranging chamber music and orchestral repertoire, both well-known and rarely heard.

The 15th edition of the Progetto takes place in June 2016, shortly after Argerich’s 75th birthday – it is hard to believe that 51 years have passed since she triumphed at the seventh International Chopin Competition in Warsaw, where one of the judges (Eugene List) Argerich remains a phenomenon, both as a supreme pianist and as a dynamic, much-loved mentor to young musicians.

The Times described Argerich’s Lugano Festival as “community music-making on a deluxe scale, with performers and listeners mutually uplifted by music’s wonders”. In addition to Argerich, the performers in 2013 included many familiar names from previous Live from Lugano releases. Among the performers who took part in the series for the first time are the violinist and Queen Elisabeth Competition winner Andrey Baranov and the pianists Thomás Alegre, Alessandro Mazzamuto, Maria Meerovitch.

The latest instalment of highlights from Martha Argerich's performances at the Lugano Festival is the 14th annual three disc set celebrating the musical fruits of a project in which young artists join seasoned performers, including Martha Argerich herself, to explore wide-ranging chamber music and orchestral repertoire, both well-known and rarely heard.

Legend of the piano Martha Argerich is releasing her first ever album partnering the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra under the baton of its new musical director, Lahav Shani.

The music on "Souvenance" is graceful, hypnotic, taut and starkly dramatic, reflecting the political upheaval sweeping oud-master Anouar Brahem's homeland of Tunisia and its neighbouring countries. Joining Brahem is his frequent collaborator, French pianist François Couturier, supported by subtle string orchestration from the Orchestra della Svizzera italiana and conductor Pietro Mianiti. The strings have a glowing transparency and fragility in these pieces, often providing shimmering texture against which the contributions of the quartet members and, above all, Brahem’s unique oud-playing, stand out in bold relief.

It was living legend Martha Argerich, Renaud Capuçon’s frequent duo partner and Khatia Buniatishvili’s mentor, who played musical matchmaker and brought these two brilliant performers together. Their concerts at Lugano Festival in 2012 were such a resounding success that the friendship stuck. Capuçon has been praised for his “intensely lyrical” tone and “gloriously rich sound” (BBC Music Magazine).

After a diploma in piano at "Niccola Piccinni" Conservatory of Music in Bari under the guidance of Gregorio Goffredo and a master at "Nino Rota" Conservatory of Music in Monopoli under the guidance of Benedetto Lupo, he attended the masterclasses of Marisa Somma, Cristian Zaccarias, Joaquin Achucarro, Francois J. Thiollier, Konstantin Bogino et Aldo Ciccolini.
