Around The World in 80 Days

This book shows how Jules Verne’s Around the World in Eighty Days changed the global imagination. Through his novel, the world was converted into a personal itinerary, scaled to the individual traveller and, by extension, to the individual reader. Exploring Verne’s modern legacy, this study shows how subsequent generations of artists and writers took on Around the World in Eighty Days as an adaptable guidebook to the modern world.

In the autumn of 1988, Michael set out to circumnavigate the world, following the route taken by the fictional character Phileas Fogg from Jules Verne’s epic novel of 1873. Michael’s journey became a 20th-century adventure like no other as he battled through thick and thin in an attempt to finish within 80 days, on his arrival back in the UK. 20 years later, Michael returns to the scene of one of the most memorable sequences of the series – the journey across the Arabian Sea from Dubai to Mumbai in a traditional dhow. Can he find the men with whom he forged a special bond, and on whom his life depended two decades ago?

composer Hans Zimmer, Bleeding Fingers composer Christian Lundberg, and score producer Russell Emanuel
have created an electrifying soundtrack for Around The World In 80 Days starring David Tennant, Ibrahim
Koma and Leonie Benesch.

Around the World in 80 Days is a period drama adventure television series based on the 1873 Jules Verne novel of the same name. It was commissioned by the European Alliance, a co-production alliance of France Télévisions, ZDF of Germany, and RAI of Italy, with additional co-production partners of Masterpiece (US) and Be-Films/RTBF (Belgium). It was produced in the UK, France and South Africa, with filming also taking place in Romania. The series first premiered on La Une in Belgium, on 5 December 2021, and later on BBC One in the United Kingdom on 26 December 2021. In November 2021, ahead of the premiere, it was announced the programme had been renewed for a second series.

The musical by Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II, burst onto Broadway with inexhaustible pomp, presenting a sophisticated and balanced book accompanied by melodies of extraordinary beauty.
