Asdis Ran

The Chinese pianist Ran Jia gained international attention for her extraordinary interpretations of Franz Schubert’s piano works. Tan Dun praised her as a ‘piano poet with dramatic skill in music-making’ and her Schubert recordings were ranked alongside famous Schubert albums by Kempff, Lupu and Richter. Now Ran Jia, who was appointed professor at the Shanghai Conservatory of Music in 2022, is releasing her new album, which she dedicates to Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s poetic sonata cosmos.

Recording solo pieces was a departure from my usual ensemble or orchestral work, requiring a different mindset and approach (…) the solitude allowed for introspection and deep connection with the music, resulting in a profoundly personal recording experience. – Ásdís Valdimarsdóttir

The viola is surely not the most assertive instrument among the string family. It reaches neither the extreme height of the violin nor the rumbling depth and the strength of the cello and contrabass. Its role is more integrating than leading or polarizing; and in brilliance, maneuverability and sound projection the violin wins hands down. But if a composer wants to express his feelings with maximum intensity and depth, he chooses the viola remarkably often.

To anyone who plays chamber music of any sort, Schubert’s music is a wonderful world to enter. It lifts our spirit to a dreamlike state of awe that is quite unique, with it sweeping long lines and pure poetry. The masterpieces on this cd were ‘stolen’ from Schubert’s original instrumentation. Start with the Arpeggione sonata, originally written for the ‘Arpeggione’, a bowed instrument with six strings and frets, tuned like a guitar but played like a gamba.
