Reimagining the Historian in Victorian England: Books, the Literary Marketplace, and the Scholarly Persona

Reimagining the Historian in Victorian England: Books, the Literary Marketplace, and the Scholarly Persona by Elise Garritzen
English | PDF EPUB (True) | 2023 | 397 Pages | ISBN : 3031284607 | 11.7 MB

This book traces the transformation of history from a Romantic literary pursuit into a modern academic discipline during the second half of the nineteenth century, and shows how this change inspired Victorians to reconsider what it meant to be a historian. This reconceptualization of the ‘historian’ lies at the heart of this book as it explores how historians strove to forge themselves a collective scholarly persona that reflected and legitimised their new disciplinary status and gave them authority to speak on behalf of the past. The author argues that historians used the persona as a replacement for missing institutional structures, and converted book parts to a sphere where they could mould and perform their persona. By ascribing agency to titles, footnotes, running heads, typography, cover design, size, and other paratexts, the book makes an important shift in the way we perceive the formation of modern disciplines.
Truth and Fiction in The Da Vinci Code: A Historian Reveals What We Really Know about Jesus, Mary Magdalene, and Constantine

Truth and Fiction in The Da Vinci Code: A Historian Reveals What We Really Know about Jesus, Mary Magdalene, and Constantine by Bart D. Ehrman
English | November 1st, 2004 | ISBN: 0195307135, 0195181409 | 232 pages | True PDF | 1.77 MB

In his staggeringly popular work of fiction, Dan Brown states up front that the historical information in the The Da Vinci Code is all factually accurate. But is this claim true? As historian Bart D. Ehrman shows in this informative and witty book, The Da Vinci Code is filled with numerous historical mistakes. Did the ancient church engage in a cover-up to make the man Jesus into a divine figure?

Dacus’ breathtaking 2015 debut album, No Burden, earned her the heavy title of indie rock’s “next big thing.” It wasn’t without merits: a gifted songwriter and skilled guitarist with a shape-shifting voice that growls as effortlessly as it glides, she's the rare sort of artist who seemed to arrive fully formed. But Historian proves the 22-year-old is just getting started. Rich with daring left turns (album opener “Night Shift” stretches an intrepid six and a half minutes) and penetrating lyrics about death and grief (“Pillar of Truth”), it’s a scintillating sophomore album that’s rooted in sadness and resolved in hope.
