A rafter-reaching voice, classically trained chops, literate lyricism, and a sassy spark enable Mackenzie Nicole to quietly rewrite the rulebook for pop. Equally inspired by Rihanna, Halsey, Johnny Cash, and The Doors, the 18-yearold impresario who can readily quote The Shining or Wuthering Heights honed her immense vocal talents via singing operas in several different languages since the age of six.

Continuing his revived collaboration with producer Steve Jordan – the pair first worked together on 1999's Take Your Shoes Off, then reunited on 2014's In My Soul – Robert Cray headed to Memphis to cut his 18th studio set with members of the legendary Hi Rhythm Section. Setting up shop at Royal Studios, Cray got to work on a handful of originals and a collection of covers, not all of them strictly related to Memphis. In particular, Cray pushes swamp rocker Tony Joe White and "5" Royales leader Lowman Pauling, cutting two songs from each writer.

The story behind Smalls Change (Meditations Upon Ageing) goes like this: Derek Smalls, the bass player for metal relics Spinal Tap, mustered the wherewithal to craft a grand, star-studded final statement at the age of 77. By having his creation Derek Smalls go solo, Harry Shearer gets to sidestep the difficultly of mounting an actual Spinal Tap reunion and also craft a nearly bulletproof project: if the album is bad, well, that's just part of the joke, because solo albums by bassists are almost always bad.

Like so many country entertainers of his era, Charles Levi Walker (born in Copeville, Texas on November 2nd 1926) grew up in rural surroundings, spending his early years picking cotton and being inspired by the sounds of country music. After short spells with Imperial, Decca and Mercury Records he secured a deal with Columbia in mid-1958 and on his first session, June 5th 1958, recorded a new song from the up-and- coming songwriter Harlan Howard, then a fork-lift driver in California. Produced by Don Law, ‘Pick Me Up On Your Way Down’ brought success for both singer and writer. The record climbed to #2 in the US country charts during a 22 week chart run. It also set Charlie Walker’s direction in the many recordings that followed. A honky-tonk hero was born!

"Pipes of Peace" is the 4th solo studio album by English singer-songwriter Paul McCartney, released in 1983. As the follow-up to the popular "Tug of War", the album came close to matching the commercial success of its predecessor in Britain but peaked only at #15 on America's Billboard 200 albums chart. While "Pipes of Peace" was the source of international hit singles such as "Say Say Say" (recorded with Michael Jackson) and the title track, the critical response to the album was less favourable than that afforded to "Tug of War".

Styled as a conspicuous companion piece to Tug of War, Pipes of Peace mirrors its 1982 cousin in many ways: its title track holds up a mirror to its forefather – and, if that weren't enough, Paul McCartney serves up the knowing "Tug of Peace," an almost-electro collage that twists the songs into McCartney II territory – it serves up two showcases for duets with a former Motown star along with a cameo from fusion superstar Stanley Clarke and, most importantly, it is also produced by former Fab Four ringleader George Martin.

The third time around is not a charm for Carlos Santana, who delivers his third straight star-studded, middle-of-the-road pop album in a row with 2005's All That I Am. Like 2002's Shaman, this follows the blueprint that producer/record mogul Clive Davis laid down on 1999's Supernatural, which means that apart from a cut or two, Santana functions as a supporting musician to a parade of guest stars singing pop songs on his own album. On Supernatural this worked not just because it was a relatively fresh concept that revitalized Santana, but because the guest stars were well chosen and the material was sharp, commercial, and memorable. Shaman was more uneven but it did have one great single in "The Game of Love," a song penned by professional songwriters and sung by Michelle Branch - it didn't sound much like Santana, but it did make for excellent listening on adult contemporary radio…
