This is the new album from the Brazilian music quintet founded by Julien Doumenjou in 2014. It's a third opus that draws on years of interpreting the great names of MPB (Brazilian Popular Music) and a constantly renewed repertoire. This time, with the exception of 'Construção', a wild song by Chico Buarque and a real tour de force for its performers, the group offers its own original compositions. Bossa nova, samba, choro, waltz and even a nod to Mozart - everything is present in an explosion of colour and enthusiasm, made all the more infectious by the fact that the quintet has invited prestigious musicians and friends from the classical, jazz and MPB worlds to join them.

Trapped in the sound of 1982, Gil's Um Banda Um album is covered with canned keyboards and synthesizer on virtually every track. And since it's not the best collection of songs he ever released, it's difficult for the listener to get into even after managing to focus on the songs. Though the joyous, nearly five-minute title track is a highlight, there's just a bit too much synthesizer on these songs. If it wasn't for Liminha's rather understated production, Um Banda Um would probably be rated even worse.

This 2003 album by Brazilian bossa nova diva Joyce and her Banda Maluca is every bit as strong as her last outing for Far Out, Gafieira Moderna in 2001. Just a Little Bit Crazy takes the jazzier aspects of that album and mixes them up with some modern electronic keyboard work courtesy of the Norse keyboard whiz Bugge Wesseltoft. Wesseltoft and drummer Tutty Moreno construct a series of spacy bossa and jazz soundscapes with gorgeous reed and woodwind work from Nailor Proveta and Teco Cardoso.

The original Banda Black Rio were one of the great Brazilian bands of the 1970s and 80s. Formed by saxophonist Oberdan Magalhães, they were pioneers of the country’s soul, samba and funk movement, and played a key role in Rio’s black music scene in the days of the military dictatorship. The band stopped playing after Oberdan’s death in 1984, but have now been revived by his son William, a singer and multi-instrumentalist who wrote or co-wrote every track on a set that’s remarkable mostly for the number of celebrities who agreed to join in. Left to themselves, as on the title track, the band play cool, tight and rhythmic jazz-funk with a Brazilian edge, mixing brass with keyboards and guitar.

If you know it, don't avoid it. Two hundred years ago, Giovanni Battista Belzoni (1778-1823) concluded his extraordinary ride along the Nile, after four years of sensational discoveries. More than two meters tall, beard and copper-colored curly hair, the Paduan giant established himself as the first man to have entered the temple of Abu Simbel and in the pyramid of Chefren, a record holder for tombs discovered in the Valley of the Kings, author of the first best seller of Egyptology , and organizer of the first Egyptological exhibition (in London) with a catalog. An exceptional and contagious life, an engine of passions.

This is the CD reissue of the opening LP by Banda Black Rio, recorded in 1977. The instrumental band, dissolved in 1980, had an excellent work of electric samba-funk fusion, with hot brass arrangements, a good percussive section, and good solos. This first album brings the hit "Maria Fumaça," included in the homonymous soap opera. The album also has good performances of Luiz Gonzaga's "Baião," Edu Lobo's "Casa Forte," and Ary Barroso's "Na Baixa do Sapateiro," along with the band's originals.
