The two Jack McDuff albums compiled here by Ace's BGP imprint feature Brother Jack McDuff in one of his hard-swinging primes with a terrific band, which is the same one on both records. Assembled aesthetically rather than chronologically, the first date here was issued in 1966 as Prestige 7422.

This outing by baritonist Hamiet Bluiett is quite a mixed bag. The music ranges from electric funk to gospel vocals by Amba Hawthorne and a poetry reading by Shirley LeFlore. The performances certainly keep one guessing with Bluiett seeming to operate more as an instigator than necessarily the lead voice. Listeners expecting to hear avant-garde explorations will be disappointed although the leader's baritone solos are often quite adventurous. The most satisfying selection is the closer, a version of "Body and Soul" that has Bluiett playing bass sax with surprising fluency. Otherwise the music is a bit erratic but certainly stimulating and heartfelt.

Jorma Kaukonen is an American blues, folk, and rock guitarist. Kaukonen performed with Jefferson Airplane and still performs regularly on tour with Hot Tuna, which started as a side project with bassist Jack Casady, and as of early 2019 has continued for 50 years. Rolling Stone magazine ranked him #54 on its list of 100 Greatest Guitarists. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1996 as a member of Jefferson Airplane. Barbeque King is an album that Jorma Kaukonen recorded in 1980 with his then-current band Vital Parts.
