This compilation of German popular music represents the diversity of songs and dances that might be heard at the annual Munich Oktoberfest. This Bavarian festival, lasting for sixteen days in September and October, was first held in 1810. Since 1960, however, the Oktoberfest has become a world-famous celebration of local German food, such as würstl, pretzels and sauerkraut, and, of course, beer. There are strict regulations governing which beers can be served at the Oktoberfest; currently only six breweries are approved, all brewing beer within the Munich city limits. The music played at the Oktoberfest, in complete contrast to the exclusive nature of its beer, is highly eclectic. This compilation will evoke the atmosphere of Oktoberfest, lederhosen, the dirndl and huge steins overflowing with German beer before you even drink a drop. Prost!

Duke Ellington was still touring in 1971, though his orchestra had lost many of his star soloists due to death or retirement, with the passing of Johnny Hodges being the greatest loss. The first ten tracks here initially appeared on the Polish bootleg LP Last Time, which utilized poorly edited excerpts of a radio broadcast of his Warsaw concert, resulting in losing the pacing of a typical show by the bandleader. At least this Gambit reissue identifies the songs correctly…

The Andrews Sisters were an American close harmony singing group of the swing and boogie-woogie eras. The group consisted of three sisters: contralto LaVerne Sophia, soprano Maxene Anglyn, and mezzo-soprano Patricia Marie "Patty". The sisters have sold an estimated 90 million records. Their 1941 hit "Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy" can be considered an early example of rhythm and blues or jump blues. Other songs closely associated with the Andrews Sisters include their first major hit, "Bei Mir Bist Du Schön (Means That You're Grand)" (1937), "Beer Barrel Polka (Roll Out the Barrel)" (1939), "Beat Me Daddy, Eight to the Bar" (1940), "Don't Sit Under the Apple Tree (With Anyone Else but Me)" (1942), and "Rum and Coca Cola" (1945), which helped introduce American audiences to calypso.

The foremost song parodist of the MTV era, "Weird Al" Yankovic has carried the torch of musical humor more proudly and more successfully than any performer since Allan Sherman. In the world of novelty records – a genre noted for its extensive back catalog of flashes-in-the-pan and one-hit wonders – Yankovic was king, scoring smash after smash over the course of an enduring career that has found him topically mocking everything from new wave to gangsta rap. Alfred Matthew Yankovic was born October 23, 1959, in Downey, California.

"The best sound around…the excitement of sound in motion" is what the album promises. It's half a decade after the RCA Stereo Action series, and Leo Addeo is still going strong. With only ten tunes, A Sound Spectacular in Total Dynamics is a little light, but Addeo fans will not be disappointed. All tracks are at least good, and "Ain't We Got Fun" is remarkable. While it must have been hopelessly square in 1968, there is a timelessness to these old standards. Freshness in the arrangements must be entirely the product of Addeo's "space-age" enthusiasm.

The Andrews Sisters came on the scene in 1938 with Bei Mir Bist Du Schoen, and closed out their era (early fifties) with the dreamy balled, I Can Dream Can't I? and the monster smashes in between with Rum and Coca-Cola and Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy to name just a few. Their blissful passion shines on through in this 4 disc collection of some of their most popular tunes. Disc One and Two are all their Top Ten hits in chronological order. Disc three and four are full of rare tunes that are also quite enjoyable. You can't listen to these tracks and not tap your feet and sing along.

We include all of the hits here which were recorded from 1938 through to the early 1950s.

Amazon Review by Adrian Clark
'Golden' is one word that you really can associate with this generous compilation, whose tracks cover the 1920s up to the mid 1970s. Most of the songs on this compilation would have been played on the various radio programmes multiple times during the 1950s and 1960s and anyone who listened to the radio regularly around this period will find them instantly recognisable. This was a period when innocence ruled the airwaves and these cheerful, light songs- many of which were chart hits- would have been sung along to in many homes.
