As is so often the case in jazz, vocalist Jeffrey Smith found an appreciation for his music in Europe long before his talent was recognized in his native U.S. DOWN HERE BELOW may be just the thing to alter that situation. Unlike the many R&B-oriented vocalists who cross over into the jazz world, Smith has a polished, eloquent delivery not dissimilar to that of the late, great Johnny Hartman. His agile phrasing and effortless swing are showcased to fine effect on Coltrane's undulating "Afro Blue," the Philly soul classic "Love On A Two-Way Street" and more. The urgent, angular piano of Rodney Kendrick and the emotive violin of Regina Carter prove to be excellent foils for Smith's steady, unruffled vocal approach. ~ AllMusic Review by AllMusic
