French pop / French rock / Chanson

There aren’t many artists whose personal life overshadows their musical output but Serge Gainsbourg wasn’t like most artists. His early career was spent smoking Gitanes, lurching between love affairs with various screen sirens and drinking his way through the nightclubs of Paris. Later he would become a dishevelled regular on French television, setting fire to a 500 franc note and drunkenly declaring his wish to bed Whitney Houston, before dying of a heart attack at 62. It’s little wonder that, apart from a bar of heavy breathing in ‘Je t’aime… moi non plus’, history can’t handle Gainsbourg’s musical accomplishments and some of the singer’s best work remains largely forgotten.

Three years ago, Lulu Gainsbourg launched his career with a wonderful gift for his father who passed away twenty years before. The musician imagined a stunning album of covers, on which he brought together Vanessa Paradis, Iggy Pop, Scarlett Johansson, Marianne Faithfull, Johnny Depp and Rufus Wainwright among others. Entitled From Gainsbourg to Lulu, this album was a prerequisite step before he could take off as a solo artist. “At first, it was important for me to pay tribute to my father’s work. I also wanted his songs to be known in other countries. But to remain the son who indefinitely revisits my dad’s repertoire was out of question. I did not want to go on tour with that record, I was already thinking about my own personal project.”

Although critics will argue over the merits of his work, there is no denying that Serge Gainsbourg is one of the most fascinating figures in French popular music. He is best-known on this side of the Atlantic for "Je T'aime Moi Non Plus," a breathy duet with Jane Birkin whose slick, sensual soft rock melody won over many a listener (Birkin's convincingly acted moans of pleasure made it fairly scandalous).

The son of legendary chanteur Serge and the brother of actress/singer Charlotte, Lulu Gainsbourg finally followed in his family's musical footsteps at the age of 25 with this tribute record, From Gainsbourg to Lulu. Its 16 covers of his late father's work include five solo numbers, collaborations with both English-language artists (Scarlett Johansson on "Bonnie & Clyde"), and some of his homeland's biggest stars (M on "Requiem pour un Con"), and tracks recorded solely by the likes of Iggy Pop ("Initial BB"), Shane MacGowan ("Sous le Soleil Exactement"), and Vanessa Paradis & Johnny Depp ("Ballade de Melody Nelson").

The daughter of Serge Gainsbourg and Jane Birkin, Lars Von Trier's muse, actress and singer Charlotte, released her second album in 2006, twenty years after her first "Charlotte Forever" where all songs (except one) were Serge Gainsbourg compositions. Though in this album Charlotte decided to sing mostly in English to distance herself from her famous parents, the mood of the songs is highly erotic and her vocal approach reminds Jane Birkin. She collaborated with french, english and irish musicians and the album became platinum in France and sold over half a million copies. Enjoy.
