The bad-saintly Vitalis is the last of the four operas by Swiss composer Richard Flury (1896-1967). It was premiered in 1963, a year after its completion, and then went unheard until this recording.

And so the focus of our latest Telemann album is his magnificent oratorio for the feast of St. John, Gelobet sei der Herr, with expressive texts by the poet and musician Albrecht Jacob Zell. Zell succeeds in imagining dramatic, almost theatrical scenes, thus providing Telemann with models for tone-painting. Not only is the vocal cast extremely lush, including three basses, but the instrumentation is also very rich, including the use of four horns and three transverse flutes. Once again, Telemann unfolds a wide range of expression. The lament of the Egyptians over the slain children, in F minor and chromatic turns, is moving; the depiction of the fleeing people and their pursuers, who cannot reach them, is full of external movement and tension, with chains of sixteenth notes on the one hand and syllabic declamation on the other.

In Richard Heubergers Der Opernball, its Carnival time, and Paul Aubier and his wife Angele are visiting Georges and Marguerite Dumenil in Paris. During their stay, Marguerite convinces Angele to test the fidelity of their husbands, and they decide to use the Paris Opera Ball as a venue for the experiment. When the husbands fall into their trap, the evening descends into utter chaos. This little operetta was being sung everywhere in 1898. In fact, it outlasted the Silver Era of the Operetta, and continued to be widely performed until Heubergers death in 1914. Music director Marius Burkert studied conducting in his native Vienna, then performed at the Graz Opera and Hanover State Opera.

The Big Band of the Bundeswehr (BigBandBw) was founded in 1971 on the Initiative of the then Federal Minister of defense, Helmut Schmidt, and the show orchestra of the German armed forces. Helmut Schmidt wanted a "modern Sound for a modern army". The Band is stationed in the Mercator-Kaserne in Euskirchen, touring year-round by Germany, and is especially engaged in charity events.
