Blue Genes

Black Orchid is an album by jazz group The Three Sounds featuring performances recorded in 1962 and released on the Blue Note label. The 1998 limited CD reissue features other seven unissued tracks recorded at different sessions. It was also issued in Japan in 2015, on SHM-CD, featuring different bonus tracks recorded on the same sessions.

Christopher (Kit) Lukas's mother committed suicide when he was a boy. He and his brother, Tony, were not told how she died. No one spoke of the family's history of depression and bipolar disorder. The brothers grew up to achieve remarkable success; Tony as a gifted journalist (and author of the classic book, Common Ground), Kit as an accomplished television producer and director. After suffering bouts of depression, Kit was able to confront his family's troubled past, but Tony never seemed to find the contentment Kit had attained—he killed himself in 1997. Written with heartrending honesty, Blue Genes captures the devastation of this family legacy of depression and details the strength and hope that can provide a way of escaping its grasp.

Groovin' Hard is a collection of previously unreleased live recordings of the legendary jazz trio, The Three Sounds, led by groove-master pianist Gene Harris. Captured live at Seattle's Penthouse jazz club from 1964-1968, featuring longtime Three Sounds bassist Andy Simpkins and drummers Bill Dowdy, Kalil Madi and Carl Burnett, this set contains soulful originals and jazz standards such as 'Blue Genes' and 'The Shadow of Your Smile,' which was never released on any other Three Sounds album.

The Three Sounds were a fairly popular piano trio in the late '50's and '60's, operating in the same general area as Red Garland, Oscar Peterson or Ramsey Lewis. They were tight, straight-ahead, nothing particular challenging, but very tasteful and swinging. Their repertoire was mostly standards and bluesy originals. Pianist Gene Harris was the real deal, and enjoyed a bit of a resurgence later in his life, with his strong, two-handed style. This is a nice sampling of the group, including a couple of albums that are hard to find. The Lou Donaldson and Anita O'Day sides add variety. Already had some of the material, but at this price, a no-brainer. If you aren't familiar with the group, and you're a fan of this type of jazz, this would be an excellent place tho start. ~ review by Dave
