Bob Drake had set the bar pretty high with his third solo album, the admirable Skull Mailbox (And Other Horrors). So it should not come as a surprise that 13 Songs and a Thing feels somewhat weaker, yet still makes a damn fine record of avant-garde progressive rock (or experimental rock or crack-pot rock songs from beyond the grave, whatever suits you better). This album is the close relative of Skull Mailbox…

Bob Drake's latest might be my favorite yet. After the unusually stripped-down Bob's Drive In, Bob decided to rebound and make an "overproduced" album and oh boy is this thing ludicrously dense. Bob's way too good of a producer to let the concept get away from him, though, and the result is these are songs that have a huge depth in the arrangements. Especially impressive considering it's, as with all of his albums, basically a one-man project.

Drake is a behind-the-scenes kind of guy who customarily plays a little bass and is otherwise a recording engineer, mixer, and producer. He has worked with Thinking Plague, the Science Group, and out-rock types like Chris Cutler and Fred Frith, who often appear on England's ReR Megacorp label.

This weirdly fascinating album consists of no fewer than 52 brief tracks, each of them averaging less than one minute in length, and all of them built around a strange sort of geographical-supernatural concept. The CD's insert booklet consists of the lyrics to the songs illustrated with creepily beautiful oil paintings by Ray O'Bannon, most of them featuring surreal images of death, decay, and foreboding.

A college friend of Nick Drake, Robert Kirby’s first commissioned works as an arranger were his unique, autumnal orchestrations for Drake’s “Five Leaves Left”. The sound was English and melancholic, closer to Vaughan Williams than Phil Spector. He was soon in demand and by the end of the 70s had worked with the cream of the British folk rock world. This is the first collection of Kirby’s very special sound.

Early Plague Years combines Thinking Plague's first two albums on one CD. Moonsongs was a 1986 cassette released the next year on LP by Dead Man's Curve. …A Thinking Plague was first released on LP in 1984, then on cassette in 1986. Both were long out of print and impossible to find. The remastering is fabulous, giving these albums a sound far superior to what they ever had. Due to time limitations, a few edits had to be done. "Warheads" misses four bars toward the end, the improv "Collarless Fog That One Day Soon" fades out two minutes earlier, and the percussion section on "Moonsongs" has been shortened a bit. Nothing dramatic and all seamless, but one can't help but wonder why Cuneiform put the second album first on the CD. Fans of Thinking Plague and of American avant-prog bands like the Motor Totemist Guild, U Totem, and 5uu's will be delighted, but newcomers to this style should begin with In This Life or In Extremis.

In the philosophical tradition of Taoism, “Chi” is the word used to describe the animating force of the universe, the breath of life that permeates all existence. A natural phenomenon, when channeled it can provide a spark to ignite seemingly supernatural powers. In their first meeting as a trio, saxophone great and NEA Jazz Master Dave Liebman and virtuoso percussionists Adam Rudolph and Hamid Drake tap into that spiritual force to create Chi, a transcendent collaboration deeply possessed of fresh inspiration and deep roots, ancient traditions and modern invention.
