The Shangri-Las - Myrmidons Of Melodrama - The Definitive Collection (2002)
FLAC (tracks) - 356 MB | MP3 CBR 320 kbps - 180 MB
01:18:26 | Soul, Pop, Rhythm & Blues, Ballad | Label: RPM Records

UK collection. Few back catalogs have been treated with such little respect as that of the wonderful Shangri-Las. Despite the quality of their material - which remains highly collectable - they've suffered a history of badly compiled albums with shoddy packaging and more to the point appalling sound reproduction. RPM have produced a vastly improved sound quality collection before but are now able to go even one better by introducing the true stereo versions of their key recordings. In addition RPM are adding both sides of the hideously rare debut single from the group in turn making it's debut on CD. The packaging is in digipack format as part of RPMs Special edition series containing a dynamic new front cover, new photographs and liner notes.

Martha Reeves & The Vandellas - The Definitive Collection (2008)
XLD | FLAC | Tracks (Cue&Log) ~ 390 Mb | Mp3 (CBR320) ~ 160 Mb | Scans included
Soul, Pop-Soul, Doo-Wop, R&B | Label: Motown/Universal | # 006025 17773325 | 00:51:30

The Definitive Collection does an effective job of chronicling the majority of Martha & the Vandellas biggest hits from their first chart entry "Come and Get These Memories" in 1963 to their final one, "Honey Chile," in 1967. All of the familiar radio tracks such as "Heatwave," "Dancing in the Street," "Nowhere to Run," and "Jimmy Mack" are featured alongside several singles of equal quality that didn't get as much radio play upon initial release. While there are other, more exhaustive compilations, such as the double-disc set Live Wire! The Singles 1962-1972, this is the best concise overview of Martha & the Vandellas' career, containing the most hits on a single disc.

R&B, Soul/Funk, Motown | EAC Rip | FLAC, Tracks+CUE+LOG+Scans (TIF) | 51:32 | 688,24 Mb
Label: Motown/UMe (USA) | Cat.# B0011733-02 | Released: 2008-09-23

Solid and steady hitmakers for Motown in the late 1960s, the Four Tops, led by the deep, soulful voice of Levi Stubbs and blessed with A-line songs from the Holland-Dozier-Holland writing team, were one of the finest singing groups the label ever produced. Singles like "Reach Out I'll Be There," "Standing in the Shadows of Love," "Bernadette," "I Can't Help Myself," and the wise-beyond-its-era "It's the Same Old Song" were radio staples in their time, and actually still continue to be staples on 21st century oldies stations. That's staying power, and it's no accident. The songs, at least the singles, were good and the Tops' sound was a hair rougher and edgier than a lot of Motown's issues at the time.

FLAC (tracks+.cue, log) | 1:18:21 | 477 Mb
Genre: Classic Rock

One of the great bands of the rock & roll era, the Kinks pioneered hard rock with such wild early ravers as "You Really Got Me" and "All Day and All of the Night," singles that inspired such peers as the Who and David Bowie while also pointing the way forward for punk and metal. That turned out to be the first act in a career that ran into the 1990s, making them the only British Invasion band outside of the Rolling Stones to last that long. Where the Stones always occupied center stage, the Kinks operated on the margins, both by accident and design. Lead singer/songwriter Ray Davies fashioned himself as an observer of human behavior, developing a gift for character and commentary that flourished on such mid-'60s singles as "Dedicated Follower of Fashion" and "Sunny Afternoon."

The 2005 double-disc set Rock of Ages: The Definitive Collection is the second Def Leppard compilation to be released in the U.S. The first, Vault: Def Leppard Greatest Hits, appeared ten years earlier, and while the band was active in the decade separating the two albums, charting fairly consistently, it didn't have any major hits during that time, so the chief appeal of Rock of Ages versus Vault is that it covers more ground. Vault had 15 songs. Rock of Ages has 35, including all of the songs on Vault…

Ray Columbus & the Invaders were a rock group from Christchurch, New Zealand that was active from 1964 to 1966, fronted by the lead vocalist, Ray Columbus, a musician, television host and manager. Part of the new surf music craze, they were the first New Zealand band to have a number 1 in another country, Australia, with their cover of The Senators' song "She's a Mod".

FLAC (tracks), Lossless / MP3 320 kbps | 2:14:05 | 767 / 307 Mb
Genre: Rock, Country-Rock, Folk, Psychedelic

Released in the fall of 1989, To Kingdom Come is a double-disc set that purports to be "The Definitive Collection" and, in a sense, it does provide a good overview of the band's career. Over the course of 31 songs, the collection works its way through the hits and album tracks, adding such rarities as "Get Up Jake," "Back to Memphis," and "Lovin' You Is Sweeter Than Ever," even if it never touches on The Basement Tapes. All the predictable items are here and the album tracks are well-chosen, and it is a good representation of the band, worth the time of listeners who want a smartly assembled anthology. The 2000 Greatest Hits gets the edge for casual fans, since it has 20 tracks on one disc, yet this remains worthwhile for listeners who want a fairly comprehensive, thorough anthology.
