Taking advantage of his time in a Covid-inspired quarantine, JBJ rejiggered Bon Jovi 2020 so it reflected all the political turmoil of the year, adding songs about war, disease, empathy, and compassion. Jon Bon Jovi doesn't disguise his somber attitude. He reigns in both volume and hooks, keeping focus on lyrics and mood, resulting in a record that deliberately avoids good times even when Jon Bon Jovi is singing about love and transcendence. To his credit, Bon Jovi never avoids directly confronting America's ills – he lays it all out in "American Reckoning" and implores listeners to "Do What You Can" – but despite the good intentions, Bon Jovi 2020 winds up getting swallowed up by its heavy-handed rhythms and earnest murk.

After ushering in the era of pop-metal with their 1986 blockbuster Slippery When Wet and its hit singles "You Give Love a Bad Name," "Wanted Dead or Alive," and "Living on a Prayer," Bon Jovi wound up transcending the big-haired '80s, withstanding changes in style and sound to become one of the biggest American rock bands of their time. Unlike a lot of their big-haired pop-metal peers, Bon Jovi's appeal wasn't limited to the States. Slippery When Wet, its 1988 sequel New Jersey, and 1992's Keep the Faith all were international smashes, each selling over ten-million copies worldwide. Another way they differed from other MTV favorites of the late '80s lies in how Bon Jovi cannily and subtly changed their sounds to fit the time. First, the group slowly lessened their reliance on arena rock guitars, emphasizing melody and ballads without rejecting hard rock. They incorporated elements of soft rock and country, moves that helped the band sustain their popularity into the 21st century.

After the unfortunate events that occurred on September 11, 2001, many flocked to help their fellow Americans in any way they could. Many ordinary citizens gave their time, many celebrities gave their money, and many artists created hope through the best way they know: music. Being from New Jersey, the disaster hit very close to the homes and hearts of Bon Jovi.
