For every successful hit act that cracked the charts in the early 50s to mid 60s, there were thousands of obscure artists exhibiting genuine country numbers free from mainstream oversight. Strut My Stuff rounds up such enigmas as the hectic hillbilly bopper “You’ve Been Honky Tonkin’,” the shotgun-wedding scenario of “My Inlaws Made An Outlaw Out Of Me,” and many more farm-raised rarities!

By the late 1960s Bakersfield, California was a West Coast country music mecca that, thanks to the hits of Buck Owens and Merle Haggard, challenged Nashville's dominance of the industry. The so-called Bakersfield Sound first emerged from the clubs of California's Central Valley where oil workers and day laborers went to dance. In stark contrast to the passive experience of sitting and listening to music at the Grand Ole Opry, Bakersfield bands incorporated elements of swing, rock and roll, blues, and pop, with the goal of keeping the patrons on the dance floor.

Four different groups are heard on this compilation from the Jazz in Paris series. Although all groups were promoted as bop-oriented when they were overseas, the only bona fide bop musicians on the first two sessions are tenor saxophonist Don Byas and pianist Billy Taylor. The first date is jointly credited to Byas and trombonist Tyree Glenn (known for his work with Duke Ellington and Louis Armstrong); Glenn is an effective soloist, even though he's firmly a swinger at heart. But it is Byas' big-toned solos that stand out, especially in Dizzy Gillespie's "Dynamo A" (also known as "Dizzy Atmosphere"), along with the effective comping and solos of the relative youngster Billy Taylor, who also contributed "Mad Monk"…

Part based on the club listings of the early '70s and part based on the club listings of today, this compilation has the dance floor groovers with a bit of strum, a bit of stomp, and a whole lotta Glam. You've probably never heard of any of the artists, but those collecting the Lipsmackin' series appear to be used to that now. Some acts do have interesting links, Jimmy Jukebox is that Nut Rocker Kim Fowley, 'Shout It Out; was written and produced by John Springate of the Glitter Band, 'Little Bit O'Soul' is a '60s Northern Soul classic by the Music Explosion given the glam treatment, the Jets keyboard player was also in Cockney Rebel, Roxy Roller was re-recorded by the singer in Sweeney Todd, 'Nick Gilder', who had a solo hit with it in 1977, 'Good Time Fanny' was written and produced by Andy Scott of the Sweet. RPM Records.

Christmas is generally regarded as the feast of love, even if Christmas is not always beautiful for everyone. The Rock'n'Roll contemporaries of the 1950s already recognized this when they tried to break out of established family traditions. The songs in this compilation represent both opposites sharply to each other. On the one hand Paul Anka's It's Christmas Everywhere, with all its lights and snowflakes, but Bobbie & Boobie keep it cool with their Cool, Cool Christmas. And in-between Patti Page's Santa Claus dances the boogie woogie and Edd 'Kookie' Byrnes teaches us the Christmas time under the Beatniks!

When it comes to picking material, today's young hard boppers (both instrumentalists and singers) could learn a lot from Sonny Rollins – a tenor titan who has always had a way of surprising us with interesting, unexpected choices. Over the years, he hasn't made the mistake of limiting himself to overdone Gershwin and Cole Porter favorites; Rollins doesn't exclude well-known standards by any means, but he has also made a point of interpreting a lot of material that other hard boppers have ignored (and that has included everything from forgotten show tunes to Stevie Wonder gems).
