The art of counterpoint is the art of combining melodic lines. The essence of counterpoint, however, is something deeper than a process of manipulation. It is an ingredient of the inner vitality of music and is found in nearly all music. It is to an understanding of counterpoint as such that this book is directed. Sixth impression.

EMI celebrates the 75th birthday of one of our most acclaimed and respected contemporary composers, Steve Reich. This album includes a world-premiere recording of a new scoring of Reich's "Six Pianos", entitled "Piano Counterpoint", arranged and performed by Vincent Corver, Pianist and Co-Founder of the Composer-Endorsed London Steve Reich Ensemble.

Counterpoint is one of the more complex musical theories and therefore often bypassed by many but its theory lays down the foundations musical relationships between different melodies. An understanding of the theory reveals how to create a working relationship between a bass and melody (rather than one following the other note for note, pitch for pitch), and is employed by many artists including Deadmau5 and Sasha to produce a complex musical relationship between multiple melodies.
