Must I Paint You a Picture is a generous, two-disc, 40-track survey of Bragg's career to date (this limited edition has a third disc of 10 rarities). The tracklisting was apparently assembled with the help of Bragg's fans, who were asked to vote for their favourites on Bragg's website, but this democratic initiative has only been taken so far: while "Little Time Bomb", for example, was a more popular choice than, say, "The Boy Done Good", the latter is included and the former isn't. It would, of course, be uncharitable to suggest that this is reflective of the authoritarian instincts that lurk inside most socialists.

In March 2016, British indie singer-songwriter Billy Bragg and his American counterpart Joe Henry boarded a Los Angeles-bound train at Chicago’s Union Station, guitars in hand, looking to reconnect with the culture of American railroad travel and the music it inspired. Winding along more than 2700 miles of track over four days, the pair recorded classic railroad songs in waiting rooms and at trackside while the train stopped to pick up passengers.

Billy Bragg has been the crown prince of pop (and country and "anti" folk) politics—though the Englishman would certainly hate the elitist leanings of that title—going on four decades. His 13th album has no shortage of sly, damning takes on politics; but it's also full of beautiful life lessons. "Should have seen it coming but I didn't understand/ That hubris is the enemy of best-laid plans," he sings on the slow-Sunday-morning soul song "Should Have Seen It Coming," imbued with warm Hammond as well as both pedal and lap steel. Written during the pandemic lockdown, it's one of many songs that reference the personal instabilities triggered by isolation.
