This unique 64-track, 2CD set investigates the evolution of French Yé-Yé Music from early R&R, via Le Twist, into an entirely indigenous musical style dominated almost entirely by Girl singers, which exploded in France in 1961 and '62, going on to peak popularity during the mid-to-late 60s.The genre was led by the iconic Françoise Hardy (who sings the title track) and Sylvie Vartan, followed closely by Sheila, Cris Carol, Gélou, and Gillian Hills, each of whom are represented on this set via multiple tracks.They're joined by other actresses/singers who enjoyed popularity and success in France, notably well-known names like Brigitte Bardot, Petula Clark, Dalida, Jeanne Moreau and Juliette Gréco, and also including Louise Cordet, Nancy Holloway, Magali Noël, Nicole Paquin, Patricia Carli, Annie Cordy, Marie Laforêt, Jacqueline Danno, Isabelle Aubret, and more.Many of these lesser-known sides are almost impossible to find elsewhere on CD.

Viva Maria! is a striking contrast – both in scale and mood – to Louis Malle’s previous film, the spatially confined, intensely melancholic Feu Follet (1963). A riotous adventure comedy, with lavish period costumes and an exotic location, Viva Maria! looks much more like the work of one Malle’s contemporaries, Philippe de Broca, than anything you would have expected of Louis Malle. The film stars Jeanne Moreau and Brigitte Bardot who were, at that time, among the most prominent of European actresses, each at the height of a hugely successful international film career. A publicity coup certainly, but Malle’s decision to bring together two such contrasting and prolific actresses definitely pays off – Bardot’s unbridled, girlish spontaneity and obvious erotic appeal working well alongside Moreau’s more introspective, darker kind of seductive charm.

Marc-Antoine Charpentier is the only composer of the age of Louis XIV to have distinguished himself so remarkably in the genre of the ‘sacred history’: he wrote more than thirty such works, all composed after his residence in Italy. Sébastien Daucé and the Ensemble Correspondances have carefully extracted from this outstanding corpus a number of gems that reflect both his experience in Rome (probably studying with Carissimi, the master of the oratorio) and the humanist concerns of an entire period. Like a miniature opera, each piece relates an exemplary destiny, including several strong-willed women (Judith, Cecilia, Mary Magdalene) and a deep friendship put to the test (Mors Saülis and Jonathæ).
