Bud Poweii

Lawrence "Bud" Freeman (April 13, 1906 in Chicago, Illinois – March 15, 1991 in Chicago) was an American tenor saxophonist.

The effects of the bebop revolution in jazz music are still being felt and explored. Of the half dozen true pioneers of the movement, pianist Bud Powell has remained somewhat in the shadows, although his work has become a major touchstone for true devotees of the music and a principal influence for most of jazz’s most explorative pianists.

In Toronto the quintet performed brilliantly with asides for individual temperaments. And, fortunately, there was a tape machine present to record most that came to pass.

Leo Bud Welch, the deceased delta bluesman, spent his life honing his musical craft. The Mississippi native and 30-year lumberjack performed as a gospel singer in his small hometown for years before he made his first record when he was in his seventies. The influence of the region he called home, his years of musicianship, and his welllived life blended together to create music that is as unique as he is.

Sam Most switches from his usual instrument, the flute, to the clarinet on this 1957 album that pays tribute to the songs of Charlie Parker, Bud Powell, Thelonious Monk and Miles Davis. The eight songs here are divided into two sessions: one featuring Most leading a 16-piece orchestra and another with Most backed by a sextet. Both bands were made up of a combination of East Coast musicians.

This 1963 date is titled for Dexter Gordon's living in self-imposed Parisian exile and recording there with two other expatriates and a French native. Along with Gordon, pianist Bud Powell and Kenny "Klook" Clarke were living in the City of Lights and were joined by the brilliant French bassist Pierre Michelot.
