Après avoir réservé une place dans le train en direction de Paris, via Madrid, Mathieu Fabert, un notable vieillissant, est accueilli par Martin, son fidèle domestique, qui lui annonce une fois de plus la fuite de Conchita, sa ravissante petite amie. L'explosion d'une voiture piégée retarde encore un peu plus le départ de Mathieu. A son arrivée sur le quai de la gare, le vieil homme déverse un seau d'eau sur la tête d'une femme au visage marqué de coups pour l'empêcher de monter dans le train. Puis Mathieu prend enfin place dans le compartiment qu'il partage avec une jeune mère de famille, un magistrat et un nain, à qui il entreprend de raconter l'histoire de sa vie…

Just after boarding a train, much to the surprise of his fellow passengers, a man pours a bucket of water over a young girl on the platform. Over the next few hours he explains (and we see in flashback) how he became obsessed by her (so much so that he failed to notice that she was played by two different actresses, representing different sides of her personality), and how she tantalised him, but would never allow him to satisfy his desire for her…
