This is a very solid score from master composer Thomas Newman. The atmosphere he is able to create with this score is incredible. Many of the tracks (especially those with Dory's new theme) seem to fade in and out with a spectral kind of quality, and help to establish the film's themes, especially concerning what it is like to live with a disability like short-term memory loss. His new action cues, such as "Hank,"and "Becky Flies" are fun and explosive and feature Newman's classic blend of interesting and brilliant tonal colors and instrumentation. Those who were afraid this score would find Newman resting on his laurels and rehashing the Finding Nemo score will be relieved that he only summons up a few cues from that film. Finding Dory is a highly original score. Newman achieves a new kind of depth here than what is typical of his work. While he may usually use a lot of strong, reverberating bass, here in this score the depth is achieved by an almost dizzying amount of instrumental layering. The score works brilliantly on screen, and is a lovely listening experience on album.
