Cézanne is now considered a leading figure in the post-impressionist movement and a profound influence on the course of modern art.

Cézanne: Portraits of a Life (2018)
Dedicated to the portrait work of Paul Cézanne, the exhibition opens in Paris before traveling to London and Washington. One cannot appreciate 20th century art without understanding the significance and genius of Paul Cézanne. Filmed at the National Portrait Gallery in London, with additional interviews from experts and curators from MoMA in New York, National Gallery of Art in Washington DC, and Musée d’Orsay in Paris, and correspondence from the artist himself, the film takes audiences to the places Cézanne lived and worked and sheds light on an artist who is perhaps one of the least known and yet most important of all the Impressionists.

They loved each other with the ardor of thirteen-year-old boys. Rebellion and curiosity, hopes and doubts, girls and dreams of glory – they shared it all. Paul was rich, Emile poor. They went skinny-dipping, drank absinthe, starved, only to overeat. Sketched models by day, caressed them by night... Now, Paul is a painter and Emile a writer. Glory has passed Paul by. But Emile has it all: fame, money, the perfect wife, whom Paul once loved. They judge each other, admire each other, confront each other. They lose touch, meet up again, like a couple who cannot stop loving each other.

Ils s’aimaient comme on aime à treize ans : révoltes, curiosité, espoirs, doutes, filles, rêves de gloires, ils partageaient tout. Paul est riche. Emile est pauvre. Ils quittent Aix, « montent » à Paris, pénètrent dans l’intimité de ceux de Montmartre et des Batignolles. Tous hantent les mêmes lieux, dorment avec les mêmes femmes, crachent sur les bourgeois qui le leur rendent bien, se baignent nus, crèvent de faim puis mangent trop, boivent de l’absinthe, dessinent le jour des modèles qu’ils caressent la nuit, font trente heures de train pour un coucher de soleil…
