Among England's famed university choirs, the King's College Choir of Cambridge has both one of the deepest histories and some of the most visible present-day activities. Its annual broadcasts of the Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols, begun in 1918, have been an integral part of Christmas celebrations in many countries. The Choir of King's College was founded in 1441 by England's King Henry VI as the resident ensemble of King's College Chapel, a status it continues to hold today. The choir shrank during some of the tumultuous events of the 15th through the 17th centuries but continued to operate. By the early 20th century, it had reached its present complement of 30 members: 16 boy choristers and 14 adult choral scholars, plus two organ scholars.

Sounding as glorious as ever under Director of Music Daniel Hyde, the Choir of King’s College celebrates Easter with a wide-ranging and beautifully assembled program recorded in King’s College Chapel. Starting with an anthem by the late English composer, conductor, and musician George Malcolm, complete with an attention-grabbing introductory fanfare by Matthew Martin (Director of College Music at Gonville & Caius College, Cambridge), the musical journey runs from William Byrd to Maurice Duruflé with some well-known hymns along the way. There are numerous highlights: the high drama of Rossini’s “O salutaris Hostia,” Samuel Sebastian Wesley’s very Victorian “Wash Me Throughly,” Antonio Lotti’s resonant “Crucifixus à 6,” and the gentle poise of John Ireland’s “Greater Love Hath No Man.”

Hymns are a living link with the past, yet they still find freshness and relevance in the twenty- first century. Saint Thomas Aquinas comments that ‘hymns are the praise of God with song; a song is the exultation of the mind dwelling on eternal things, bursting forth in the voice’ and this explains neatly the vital place that hymnody has enjoyed throughout the ages, and continues to do so today. Praise my soul celebrates this glorious tradition of hymnody and showcases some of the hymns heard in Jesus College Chapel in their own regular pattern of choral services. Some of these, including Drop, drop, slow tears and Glory to thee, my God, this night have been sung regularly for hundreds of years. Others such as All my hope on God is founded or Christ Triumphant have become classics over the last half-century. The Choir of Jesus College Cambridge return to disc on Signum with their seventh release, and their first under choral director Richard Pinel.

Richard Marlow came of age amid ancient and venerable institutions whose works he triumphantly shepherded through an era sorely challenging traditional assumptions. As a chorister at Southwark Cathedral, he sang at the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II in 1953. His education was accomplished at Cambridge University's Selwyn College, where he became an organ scholar and research fellow, studying under Thurston Dart, the musicologist and harpsichordist whose performances and recordings of English Renaissance music – shoulder to shoulder with those of Alfred Deller and Gustav Leonhardt – revealed it afresh to a new generation of listeners in the 1950s and '60s.

Graham Ross directs the Choir of Clare College, Cambridge in a sequence for Corpus Christi, one of the most important feasts in the liturgical calendar. Thomas Aquinas's celebrated Eucharistic hymns appear in settings from the 16th, 20th and 21st centuries, framed by two masterpieces celebrating the Holy Communion: masterpieces celebrating the Holy Communion: Josquin's Missa Pange Lingua and Finzi's extended anthem, Lo, the full, final Sacrifice.
