Dave Brubeck The Legacy Jazz Collection
Jazz | APE | 2CDs Winrar 330 + 350 MB | 1995

This two-CD set gives one a fine overview of the Dave Brubeck Quartet during their years on Columbia. All of the 28 selections are available elsewhere so longtime collectors will want to skip this reissue, but those listeners just beginning to discover Brubeck's special music may want to acquire this set for a start. The main "hits" ("Take Five," "Blue Rondo A La Turk," etc.) are here but, even with guest appearances by Carmen McRae, Louis Armstrong, Charles Mingus and Jimmy Rushing (along with two later selections that have baritonist Gerry Mulligan in altoist Paul Desmond's place), the emphasis is very much on the classic Quartet. For a period in 1977-78 (after the death of altoist Paul Desmond), pianist Dave Brubeck had a quartet with his sons keyboardist Darius, drummer Dan and Chris on bass and trombone. This Montreux concert features five of Dave Brubeck's originals (including "It's a Raggy Waltz" and "In Your Own Sweet Way") along with the standard "It Could Happen to You" and finds father Dave in fine form even if Desmond is clearly missed.

No words can describe how great the inaugural release from Complete 60s Records is – because there are no words! This exciting new label from England is undertaking an unprecedented, decade-long project to compile every single Billboard Hot 100 instrumental hit of the 1960s. Complete Pop Instrumental Hits of the Sixties, Vol. 1 – 1960 marks the beginning of a series of releases that will definitively document the decade when the pop instrumental genre truly reached its zenith. Rock, rhythm ’n’ blues, country, and orchestral instrumental singles all vied for a spot in the Hot 100 weekly charts. Hundreds of them earned that coveted spot in history, and when this project is complete you’ll own them all in the order they peaked on the charts! That way, you can experience them the way the world did in 1960. You’ll hear how surf music evolved, how rock combos and orchestral arrangers influenced each other, and how easy listening emerged as a distinct sound during this golden decade. The Ventures, Chet Atkins, Johnny & the Hurricanes, Percy Faith, Bill Black, Ferrante & Teicher – these giants of the genre are all here on Complete Pop Instrumental Hits of the Sixties, Vol. 1 – 1960. But, so are Monty Kelly, the Ramblers, and Charles Wolcott. Who, you ask? All of them scored instrumental hits in 1960, none of which have ever been on CD before now. In fact, this 81-track, 3-CD set includes no less than 16 CD debuts and dozens of genuinely rare tracks – 45 in true stereo. That’s over three hours of music!

Although Dave Brubeck and Paul Desmond made many rewarding recordings together, this was their only duo album; it was inspired by several duo performances on board a cruise ship. Their magical ESP is evident from start to finish. Brubeck's lyricism throughout these sessions will surprise critics who label him as "bombastic," while Desmond, known for his pure dry-toned alto sax, throws a few curves to his longtime fans. The loping waltz treatment of "Alice in Wonderland" and a delicate interpretation of the Mexican folk song "The Blue Dove" contrast with their abstract approach to "Stardust."

Jens Søndergaard has always had a large and faithful audience. There is a good reason why he has always had a tightly packed calendar. The audience loves the warm radiance of Søndergaard and the beautiful and melodic play on the saxophone.
Now he has recorded The Brubeck-Desmond songbook, which is a return to the music that has gotten so many into the Jazz. Dave Brubeck and Paul Desmond are two of the most iconic composers in the history of Jazz. When you hear Jens Søndergaard interpret their repertoire with his regular quartet, it is difficult not to just sit back and enjoy how simple and elegant it can be done…

The first thing I'd like to convey is that this Proper box has excellent sound. It's very clear & natural. Top notch remastering indicates some extra care was devoted on this release. Paul Desmond was the primary draw for me on this purchase along with the live stuff. Brubeck's Live at Oberlin was the obvious well known release which is included here on CD4. This begins in the late 40s and is a large band configuration which is quite interesting & unique. Few would ever guess Brubeck would be in the midst of this!

This live bootleg gives the appearance of featuring the Dave Brubeck Quartet with Gerry Mulligan exclusively by its title, though the photo is of Brubeck's earlier group with Paul Desmond, Eugene Wright, and Joe Morello. It's actually a compilation of several different groups recorded during a 1970 festival in Poland (likely Warsaw). Brubeck and Mulligan are joined by bassist Jack Six and drummer Alan Dawson for their two tracks, which include a spirited rendition of Mulligan's "Jumping Bean" and an extended "St. Louis Blues" that proves to be rather humorous, especially with the baritone saxophonist's detour into "I Let a Song Go out of Heart."
