Dave and Iola Brubeck wrote most of the songs on this vocal compilation, including excerpts from their show The Real Ambassadors. Culled from several early 1960s releases, each selection features a singer or singers. Two previously unreleased tracks are included: a take of “It’s A Raggy Waltz” with Carmen McRae and an arrangement of “Autumn In Our Town” with whispery singer Ranny Sinclair. The refreshing “Raggy Waltz” works well as a vocal number, while “Autumn In Our Town” proves to be much less effective. The combination of Sinclair’s pure, young and innocent voice alongside harsher pickups of guitar and piano creates problems.

These ten compositions by Bill Smith explore modal music in a different manner from Miles Davis, who had recorded Kind of Blue a year earlier in 1959. Smith, a longtime colleague of Brubeck's, plays on nine of them, "Soliloquy" being an excursion for Dave, accompanied only by bassist Gene Wright. Smith reveals a personal style that, however, sometimes sounds like Paul Desmond, if the latter had played the clarinet, and, at other points, conjures up of Jimmy Giuffre. Perhaps if the clarinet had been in jazz vogue at the time, Smith would have received his deserved recognition.

Paul Desmond (born Paul Emil Breitenfeld, November 25, 1924 – May 30, 1977) was an American jazz alto saxophonist and composer, best known for his work with the Dave Brubeck Quartet and for composing that group's biggest hit, "Take Five". He was one of the most popular musicians to come out of the cool jazz scene. In addition to his work with Brubeck, he led several groups and collaborated with Gerry Mulligan, Chet Baker, Jim Hall, and Ed Bickert. After years of chain smoking and poor health, Desmond succumbed to lung cancer in 1977 after a tour with Brubeck.

Tenor-saxophonist Dave Van Kreidt, a former member of Dave Brubeck's octet in the late '40s, had a reunion with the pianist, altoist Paul Desmond and bassist Bob Bates for this unusual session; Brubeck's new drummer Joe Morello made the group a quintet. Van Kreidt supplied all of the compositions (some of which are fairly complex), giving this set a sound very much different than the usual Brubeck Quartet outing. Interesting if not essential classical-influenced music that predates the Third Stream movement.

Jamaica's national motto, 'Out Of Many One People', could well be applied to the music that shaped the island's national sound, with modern reggae the result of many different musical forms coalescing to form a wonderfully unique 'one'. Fantastic Voyage's highly popular Sound System Classics series has already celebrated the American jump blues favoured at Jamaican dances in the pre-ska era, but contrary to widespread belief, US rhythm & blues and the indigenous style of mento were not the only types of music enjoyed across the island prior to the development of Shuffle Blues and Ska. In fact, the diversity of sounds that exerted a direct influence on popular Jamaican music throughout the 20th Century is astonishing, taking in gospel, blues, jazz, vocal groups, country, pop, film music and exotica, hailing from Cuba, Puerto Rico, Southern Africa and the British Isles, as well as America.

Massimiliano Morreale è un polistrumentista barese attivo dagli anni 90 nella scena underground della sua città, che nel 2020 esordisce con l'album solista "Appunti di viaggio" con la produzione dell'etichetta genovese Mellow Records. The Dave Brubeck Quartet suddenly became a Trio for this Vienna concert when, after the previous evening's concert in Hamburg, Paul Desmond went out and never made his plane to Austria. While Paul's lyricism was missed, Dave, Gene, and Joe's playing was incredibly strong, high energy & swinging. To the Brubeck family's knowledge, this is the only recording of Dave, Gene & Joe as a Trio.

This is by far the best concert the group ever gave. Right from the start the group hits it off with the old "St. Louis Blues" and from these first crucial moments in the concert everything went off like a Formula One race in the group. It is followed by a very jazzy “Bossa Nova USA” (note the difference with the original single release!) and it goes on and on.
Brubecks multi-tonal approach combines magically with Desmonds understated playing. Gene Wright blends in fantastically on the bass and has some very impressive solo's and, of course, Joe Morello's solo on "Castillian Drums" sounds really spectacular and LIVE !!!!!!
I don't think the band ever reached this high level of live playing again.
