Sulle rive dell’Ofanto, nel Mezzogiorno italiano, un secolo e mezzo fa si svolse una grande sfida. Da una parte c’era il brigante, Carmine Crocco. Pastore, militare, bandito di professione, divenne il capobanda più famoso nelle campagne meridionali dopo il 1860. Alla guida del brigantaggio filoborbonico, sperimentò forme di guerriglia che avranno fortuna nel XX secolo, anticipandone gli aspetti politici e una organizzazione criminale su larga scala. Dall’altra parte, il generale, Emilio Pallavicini di Priola, aristocratico sabaudo, militare esperto in operazioni speciali e al comando di reparti schierati nella campagna contro il brigantaggio. L’ufficiale era parte dell’antica aristocrazia di spada e interpretò la conclusione di un processo secolare, in cui i ruoli militari passavano definitivamente ai professionisti della guerra..
