Produced in 1960-61 by celebrated jazz critic Nat Hentoff, these recordings are essential to the history of modern jazz and feature such star sidemen as Archie Shepp, Clark Terry, Steve Lacy, Billy Higgins, and bassist Buell Neidlinger, who was the original leader on half of these sessions. A complete 1961 Taylor septet session produced by Creed Taylor, and his entire 1957 quartet performance at Newport have been added here as a bonus.

Pianist Cecil Taylor formed a very unique sounding band for his Blue Note Records debut in 1966. Taylor began experimenting throughout the 50s and 60s, his music became more complex and developed in a way that was different then other jazz forms of the time. The album opened up new possibilities in the realm of jazz, allowing musicians to develop unique forms of musical exchange. The unusual septet voicing includes two bass players.

Bassist Cecil McBee and Chico Freeman (who triples on tenor, soprano and flute) teamed up many times during the late 1970s and '80s. Their collaborations found them playing music that was a spiritual extension on hard bop, adventurous while moving forward. On this LP, they perform five of McBee's originals in a sextet that also includes trumpeter Joe Gardner, the percussive pianist Don Pullen (a major asset to the date), drummer Allen Nelson and percussionist Don Moye. The often melodic but unpredictable music definitely holds one's interest.
