It is coming up to five years since Sarah Chang, then in her early teens, made her brilliant and moving concerto recording debut in the Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto on EMI (12/93). Her concerto recordings for the label since then have been of brilliant showpiece works like the Lalo Symphonie espagnole (5/96) and the Paganini First Concerto (1/95) rather than of the central repertory. It is good here to have her remarkable artistry revealed again at full stretch in astonishingly mature interpretations of the Mendelssohn and Sibelius concertos.

This is a fine recording of two vastly under-appreciated works by young cello virtuoso Han-Na Chang. She has the extraordinary technique to play the excruciatingly difficult cadenza in the central movement of the Sinfonia Concertante and the sustained tone to play the long, lyrical melodies in the opening movement of the cello sonata. Antonio Pappano is a faithful accompanist whether he's directing the London Symphony Orchestra in the Sinfonia Concertante or playing the piano in the cello sonata.

Several years before making their phenomenally successful classic King Kong (1933), directors Merian Cooper and Ernest Schoedsack helmed this ethnographic docudrama set in the jungles of “Siam” (now Thailand). Basing their loose narrative on months of exposure to the natives’ daily lives, the story comes across as remarkably authentic, despite its clear staging. The close-up shots Cooper and Schoedsack were able to get of wild animals (including the infamous “tiger shot”, when a tiger’s snout literally swipes the camera’s lens) are remarkable today, and must have been doubly so back to audiences back in 1927. While this film is recommended as must-see viewing for its historical importance, it’s full of memorable images, and chances are you’ll enjoy it more than you expect.

With Sarah Chang's celebrity as a child prodigy somewhat faded and her musicianship matured, she can forgo recording encore albums and at last get to work on some serious material. That she does, and quite brilliantly, on this EMI album of violin sonatas by Franck, Saint-Saëns, and Ravel. With the solid support of her accompanist Lars Vogt, Chang delves into these French masterpieces with confidence and intense feeling, and the two performers imbue the works with spontaneity, excitement, and lifelike presence.

Simply heart-warming… Review by Neo: It is movies like Run Papa Run that keeps HK cinema interesting and its dwelling number of fans on hold. In what is quite frankly a below average year of HK Cinema, Run Papa Run comes at the right time and also it's about time too. With a flick of time, it's now the 1st of July, in financial terms; it is now officially the next financial year and luckily the latest flick from the ever dependable humanist director, Sylvia Chang steals the spotlight of 2008. What makes this flick so special is that despite venturing into a crowded and cliché genre of triad. The film somehow manages to not be clichéd and ingeniously linking Chang's most prominent theme of family values into a bittersweet packaging of a dark chocolate cake. Adding to the icing on top of the cake is the well established chemistry between Rene Liu and Louis Koo, where both seem to be just carrying on from last year's Happy Birthday.

The 1990s has been somewhat kind to Goldmark's music. His symphonies have been well recorded, particularly by Yodani Butt with the Philharmonia (ASV), while his chamber music is getting noticed (not excluding his Suites for Violin and Piano well executed by Wallin and Canino under CPO). Record companies have been re-issuing great recordings of his Rustic Wedding Symphony under Abravanel and Bernstein while others kept recordings of his works from deletion (including Hungaroton's recording of "Die Koniga von Sheba").
