According to certain scientists, it takes approximately 10,000 hours of practice to become a proficient player of any instrument. The estimate is as difficult to prove as it is to disprove; however, undeniably, virtuosity cannot be achieved in any field without thousands of hours of exercise.

"Arrau's Chopin – now available in a six-CD box (Philips 432 303-2) as part of Philips's Arrau Edition – is as far from moonstruck "sentimentality" as any Chopin ever was. But no performance of the Preludes is more sentimental, in Schiller's sense, than the version Arrau recorded for Philips in 1973. Its premise – that the cycle is a grand tragedy, the darkest thing Chopin wrote – is unmistakable. Even the prefatory C-major Prelude heaves with orgasmic rubatos – more weight, it seems, than the music can possibly bear. And yet, as Arrau packs each small berth with a world of feeling, the weight grips and holds. At times, the sheer density of emotion can seem suffocatingly intense. The Prelude No. 22, a Stygian descent, is surely Hades; the plunging scales of No. 24 rip the thread of life."

Perhaps more of an advocate for contemporary music than any other major pianist essentially rooted in traditional repertory, Maurizio Pollini was born in Milan, Italy. He learned quickly and was given piano lessons from Carlo Lonati from an early age, making his public debut at the age of nine. Enrolling in the Milan Conservatory, he studied with Carlo Vidusso. In 1957 he performed a recital of Chopin etudes in Milan that drew favorable attention from the national Italian press. He won a second prize in the 1958 Geneva Competition. Embarking on further studies with Arturo Benedetto Michelangeli, he won first prize in the Warsaw Chopin competition in 1960…

Not very forthcoming as a person, Chopin reserved for the piano alone the secret – rather than the confidences or confessions – of his inner being. It is as if the piano were his double, resonating in harmony with his sensibility and receiving his feelings, his impressions, even his hallucinations.

Yundi Li is being groomed for superstardom. He's got the looks, youth, and keyboard athleticism to fill that role, but on the basis of this all-Chopin disc (and his previous Chopin and Liszt recitals), he still lacks the interpretive maturity that translates into staying power. His B minor Scherzo, for example, comes off as excessively sectional, and its central section lacks poetry. Other works here fare better, but his attention appears focused on pianistic fluency and dazzling finger work, often at the expense of a full measure of emotional communication.

Della Reese was born Deloreese Patricia Early on July 6, 1931 in Detroit, Michigan and began singing in her local church from an early age. In late 1953 Della signed on with The Erskine Hawkins Orchestra and moved to New York and soon had a recording contract with Jubilee Records. Duke Ellington really needs no introduction, being considered by many as the greatest American composer of the 20th Century. His orchestra, over its 50 plus years of performing and recording, launched the careers of many of jazz's greatest stars. The line up for this 1962 performance still featured such respected alumni as Ray Nance, Johnny Hodges and Paul Gonsalves. This unique live concert broadcast featuring Della Reese and The Duke Ellington Orchestra was recorded on February 13, 1962 in New York City as part of a radio series specifically designed to promote a National Guard recruiting effort.
