The ‘Christmas History’ was written by Johann Rosenmüller in Leipzig in the middle of the 17th Century. Rosenmüller brought the musical avant-garde of his time from an extensive trip to Italy in the winter of 1645/46 to Central Germany, which was also culturally bled out by the Thirty Years War.

Baroque lute music is fused with elements of flamenco, jacaras, fandangos and other Spanish dances and immersed in new colours with oriental rhythms and many elements of improvisation. Spanish guitarist and composer Rafael Catala specialises in the guitar music of his homeland, which in turn is characterised by influences from a wide range of Oriental and Occidental styles. This melting pot of cultures can also be felt in his new CD mare nostrum with his ensemble Musica Iberica. The ensemble has an unusual line-up, as the guitar is joined by oriental frame drums, the Swedish nyckelharpa (a keyboard fiddle) and a baroque violone (the predecessor of the double bass).

The ensemble Spielleyt - Early Music Freiburg presents on this album a series of Christmas songs from the song collection of the Strasbourg Hymnbook of 1697. The preface to the hymnbook states that the song selection consists of ‘außerlesenen, uhralten und … new songs’. ‘Uhralt’ here means that the melodies of some songs can date back to the Middle Ages. The ensemble has restored the songs in question from the Strasbourg hymnal to a medieval sound.

Times of change are often interesting. That is certainly the case with episodes in music history in which aesthetic ideas were changing. One such period was the time around 1600. In Italy the stile concertato was born and gradually broke the dominance of the old polyphonic style. This soon spread around Europe and also reached Germany. Some composers, like Heinrich Schütz, embraced it without ever abandoning counterpoint. Others offered strong resistance and largely held to the dominant church music tradition. One of them was Christoph Demantius.

The Capricornus Consort Basel, highly praised by critics for their sensible interpretations on their recordings of Erlebach, Graupner and Manfredini, now presents instrumental music of the early Classical period. Franz Xaver Richter 1709-1789 was one of the most important members of the so-called 'Mannheim School', based at the Mannheim court, the orchestra of which was said to be the best of its time. Prince-Elector Charles Theodore gathered the best singers and instrumentalists in his residencies in Mannheim and Schwetzingen. His generosity meant the Stamitz Family, Christian Cannabich, Charles Joseph Toeschi, Ignaz Holzbauer and Franz Xaver Richter all contributed to the development of the Mannheim style and thus exerted considerable influence.

This Da Vinci Classics album affords us the delight of enjoying a journey in time and space, through the medium of Renaissance lute music. The European Renaissance is certainly a period many of us would like to visit in a time-capsule, were it available. It was a period of extraordinary flourishing of the arts – visual, musical, literary – and of culture in general. It was a period when knowledge, philology, philosophy, and religious thought experienced major developments. It was also a period not untouched by bloody wars and battles, heavy epidemics, and profound crises. Still, we owe to the Renaissance much of what our modern culture is; and we can regret having lost much of what the Renaissance bequeathed to us – in terms of sources, artworks, but also of values, expertise, and knowledge.
