In a perfect world, Lucy Reed would have been much better-known and would have built a large catalog. But regrettably, the obscure Midwestern jazz singer never became well-known, and she only recorded a few albums. Recorded at various sessions in January 1957, This Is Lucy Reed is the second of two albums she provided for Fantasy. This album, which Fantasy reissued on CD in 2001, finds Reed backed by some of bop's heavyweights, including trumpeter Art Farmer, trombonist Jimmy Cleveland, bassist Milt Hinton, arranger George Russell (who is heard on drums), and arranger Gil Evans (who plays piano on four selections).

To us, this recording represents what was great about ECM in the mid 70s, searching improvised grooves that cross the lines between free playing, textural tone bending, ethnic influences and modern fusion, but without getting too new-agey. Om were a quartet of European improvisers, many of whom would go on to delve more fully into the free scene there: Urs Leimgruber, Christy Doran, Bobby Burri and Fredy Studer, and Dom Um Romao adds some great percussive touches to this recording as a guest. The set starts out with Um Romao laying out some expressive percussion before settling into the nice modal groove of "Chipero", which is followed by the more energetic "Dumini", a spacious classic ECM number "Back To Front" and the lengthy fusion excursion "De Funk".

"They Don't Make Them Like They Used To" is the 19th studio album by country superstar Kenny Rogers. The album's title cut was used as the theme tune to the box office hit movie Tough Guys. The song "You're My Love" was written by Prince under the pseudonym "Joey Coco" and features El DeBarge on backing vocals. The album was a top 20 success on the country charts (and crossed over into the pop Billboard 200) with the single "Twenty Years Ago" peaking at #2. Two singles came from the album. The title cut, released at the end of 1986, only made #53 in the country charts although it did well by hitting #10 on the contemporary charts. When RCA released "Twenty Years Ago" in 1987, however, Rogers returned to the top five at #2, matching this feat in Canada as well.
