When 26-year-old Carmell Jones left his native Kansas for California in August 1960, he made an immediate impact on the high-calibre West Coast jazz scene. Snapped up exclusively by Pacific Jazz, he recorded his first album as a leader, “The Remarkable Carmell Jones,” the following June.

Good album featuring more soulful and jazz covers of recent pop hits (Gaga – Poker face , Jessie J- Price Tag) jazz standard ‘Footprints’ plus some original material inc the Groove laden ‘Grenade’ and mellow ‘Need You Now’

Kudos to Spain's Fresh Sound label for digging this one out of its undeserved obscurity. This 1963 session assembled by composer Sid Frey, pianist and composer Elmo Hope, and vibist Walt Dickerson (who doesn't appear on the record) is a blowing date centered around the notion of drug addiction and hopelessness for the addict/slave musician who ends up in places like Rikers Island. As a cultural and social critique, it fails other than in its liner notes. As a musical document, it is an overwhelming success. Hope surrounds himself with musicians whose reputations are now legendary: Philly Joe Jones, John Gilmore, Ronnie Boykins, Lawrence Jackson, and Freddie Douglas.

This particular album is by Al Haig the pianist Bird and Getz considered the perfect pianist and he was the one they loved the most to play with. And here you can understand why. The album is quite old, I mean it should be an early fifties record, unfortunately in my edition (1991 Fresh Sound) this information is not there. Allmusicguide says it's a 1954 album, and surely it could be correct. The sound is from the era. It is a quartet album and in the fifties it came out on the Period Label.
