Cellist Nathaniel Rosen began to study his instrument at age six with distinguished teacher Eleanore Schoenfeld. At 13 Rosen was heard by legendary cellist Gregor Piatigorsky during a local competition, and on the basis of this performance Piatigorsky agreed to take Rosen under his wing. At 17 Rosen first traveled to Moscow and was awarded a secondary prize in the 1966 Tchaikovsky Competition along with three other Americans.

“Though the musical languages are so different, parallels do emerge; the Schumann performances are enhanced by Enders and Hering's keen awareness of the importance of expressive nuance - and subtle changes of colour, microtonal inflections and dynamic contrasts are all important coponents of Isan Yun's style…All the performances are passionate and strongly committed. Enders has a splendidly clear, penetrating tone.”

This long-deleted Essential Classics reissue (available again courtesy of Arkivmusic.com’s on-demand reprint program) comprises the first CD remastering of two separate Bach piano releases. One disc features Rosalyn Tureck’s Bach Album, an early-1981 digital production made up mostly of short pieces, plus the Aria and Variations in Italian Style. The close-up yet warm sonics capture the full measure of Tureck’s technical specificity, subtle use of color, and micromanaged dynamics. Notice her absolute linear control in the F minor suite’s Prelude (first sound clip), or how her seemingly over-detached articulations (the seventh Italian variation) always maintain a lilting presence.

A quarter‐century after his death and a half‐century after some of his most controversial music was composed. Arnold Schoenberg still stands in the path of music like the ghost of the king in Hamlet, demanding to be heeded. Not that he is forgotten: Charles Rosen, in his remarkably pithy volume (the latest in the Modern Masters series edited by Frank Kermode) asserts that Schoenberg's 12‐tone and otherwise serialistic works “have, in a strange way, become a normal part of today's music; they are not often heard, but they are the works that have been imitated by hundreds of composers all over the world.” True enough, but that has not been enough to lay the ghost. The fact, which even Mr. Rosen's eloquent advocacy only emphasizes, is that the rigorously atonal works, composed after 1921, have never developed a public outside professional music circles, and even there the attitude is largely respect rather than love.

As regards the quick and complex evolution of Lieder within the timeframe of a few decades, the relationship between poetic text (lyrics) and musical composition undergoes some variations which are worth underscoring. The term Lied indicates primarily a literary genre, a strophic composition (leit means precisely “stanza” in German), whose translation as “song” should not be intended literally; it is similar to our speaking of “canto” in Homer or Dante, i.e. to indicate poetic texts which “only putatively could be accompanied by music” (G. Bevilacqua).
