Less than a year after «Avenir», Claudio Fasoli returns into a recording studio to lay down the remarkable progress accomplished with his new band, Four. He also returns to witness how serious his ideas have been. He tells Francesco Martinelli, in the recent book which Siena Jazz dedicated to him: “The choice of the electric guitar instead of the piano, changed the sound of the work… It is clear that with two kinds of sparingnesses only (of the electric guitar and the electronics) these two choices (sound and noisy color) can coexist…”. The absorbing personality of the Venetian saxophonist doesn’t alter or hide the great balance achieved by the quartet and the importance of the collective work. Fasoli furthermore specifies “They are songs composed by all of us, meanwhile in the past works, by tradition, I’ve always used my own music, but in this case, seeing the interest and contribution of the other musicians, we decided to play everyone’s compositions.”. The album opens with a long and articulated theme from the band leader, who plays his best cards at once, leading us by the hand through the meandering paths of a music that helps us to unveil, after each curve, new and surprising landscapes. Both the Michele Calgaro’s guitar – author of incisive interventions, coherent with the overall musical project – and the Gianni Bertoncini’s rhythmical imagination and expert use of electronics, attract attention.

Claudio Fasoli has brought these musicians together to give life to a brand new project. They are very well known in the US and worldwide for their innovative approach to the jazz tradition, looking for different possibilities to express themselves beyond censures and barriers. Despite the predictable artistic staff, the same of many traditional jazz ensembles, the richness of the message can be heard in the very personalized solos and compositions.

Second album from this Roman group (unchanged line-up), released on the same RCA label, and coming with a fascinating artwork, ruined by an unlikely title. The group is still solidly run by bassist Tomasso, but unlike in Azimut, he allows the others (keyboardist D'Andrea mostly) some space for their own material, but he's still by far the most prolific writer in the group. Actually for years and from the opening track of both albums, every time I put either this album or its predecessor I always had to take a look to indeed confirm which one I am listening to. I must say that between Azimut's Posto Di Non So Dove and this album's Non C'e Tempo Da Pedere (no time to lose), both are strikingly similar, from Tomasso's great vocals to the use of a bowed bass and Sidney's Hackettian guitar, and D'Andrea's great piano (first acoustic, than electric).

Italiano | 2019 | 137 pages | ISBN: 8857552055 | EPUB | 0,7 MB

The original lineup included five members, Tommaso himself at the bass, Bruno Biriaco on drums, Claudio Fasoli at sax, Tony Sidney at guitar and Franco D'Andrea on piano, the band released seven studio albums 'till his definitive breakup in 1981. The band offers a sort of jazz-rock sound inspired by Miles Davis' "Bitches Brew". This early form of fusion initially meets the resistance of so-called "purists" of jazz, but soon attract the sympathy of many fans, earning invitations to major national festivals, but also a series of concerts in Europe, especially in England and France.

Having started as a traditional jazz ensemble in the late 60s, with the turn of a new decade Perigeo tuned in for the prog rock wave and expanded their style as they began their recording career. Not that they became less jazzy, but definitely they became more sensitive and receptive towards the jazz fusion influence of Return to Forever and Weather Report, post-Wyatt Soft Machine, and even some occasional colours of "Caravanserai"-era Santana latin jazz and a bit of prog-oriented psychedelic sounds. By the time they recorded this, their album no. 4, Perigeo was a well known act in the avant- garde jazz circuits of Italy. The catchy opening track is a perfect example of the band's ability to write attractive musical ideas and technical proficiency (perhaps this is the Perigeo album to start with).
