World Premiere Recording. Born in Paris, Michael Levinas went through the classical and high level teaching of the National Superior Conservatory of Paris, working at the same time with the famous class of accompaniment, orchestra conducting and composing. In that institution he met the great musicians who made the deepest impression on him, in particular, the pianists Vlado Perlemuter, Yvonne Lefébure, and also Yvonne Loriod to whom he showed his first works.
‘Il Pastor Fido’ is a long poem by Battista Guarini – seven thousand lines worth – he lived from 1538 until 1612 and the poem was probably written c.1583 and presented at the court of Alfonso d’Este in 1585 in a dramatic form. It is labelled as a Pastoral-Comedy and describes the pains and joys of its characters and its overall sensual appeal was clearly suitable for the wedding celebrations, for which it was produced. The whole work “unleashed (to quote the booklet essay by Giuseppe Gerbino) one of the last controversies of poetic theory and moral philosophy of the late Renaissance.”
The Swiss organist, Heinrich Gurtner, attended the teacher's seminar; then he made studies in music under the tutelage of Kurt Wolfgang Senn (organ) and Pierre Souvairan (piano) in Bern. Further studies led him to Paris with Maurice Duruflé and Den Haag with Adriaan Engels. From 1949 until 1966 Heinrich Gurtner was organist at St. Peters in Bern; from 1966 until 1989 he was organist at Bern Minster, teaching activities at the conservatory in Bern, concerts in Europe and North America. In 1974he received the Music prize offered by the city of Bern. Following his retirement as Minster Organist, Heinrich Gurtner continued his concert activities until 2000.
Now many of the world’s most serious and significant pianists (Schnabel, Serkin, Brendel, Goode, etc.) have devoted a great deal of thoughtful study to the Beethoven sonatas; in general, performance of this music represents a level of erudition and deep contemplation probably unequaled by the works of any other mainstream composer. Serious pianists study every aspect of these works in minute detail; virtually everything is taken into account except those instruments which inspired Beethoven, and which he had in mind when he composed.
Together, Corey Cerovsek and Paavali Jumppanen have turned in one of the freshest, sweetest, and altogether most charming sets of Beethoven's violin sonatas in years. Though not imbued with the blazing virtuosity that Gidon Kremer and Martha Argerich or the heightened expressivity that Itzhak Perlman and Vladimir Ashkenazy brought to the works, Cerovsek and Jumppanen create performances of poise, depth, and refinement.
