It's the summer of 1943, and the Kursk salient marks the westernmost point the Red Army managed to take and hold in the winter campaign.

On 22 June 1941, a Sunday, Nazi Germany set in motion the largest invasion in the history of warfare — the attack on the Soviet Union, codenamed “Barbarossa”. By the time the four-year conflict on the Eastern Front is over, the world will have witnessed a war unfathomable in scale and unparalleled in brutality.

From 1939 to 1941, Germany stunned the world with the introduction of Blitzkrieg, a new mode of war focused on massed armored spearheads and close air support. Rapid shock and encirclement by mechanised armies replaced the grinding attrition of World War I trench warfare.

During the desperate defensive battles in late summer and autumn 1942, the Soviet high command carefully husbanded its reserves. By November, German attacks culminated in the rubble of Stalingrad and in the frozen foothills of the Caucasus. Now, with their enemy perilously overextended, the Soviets aim to strike several devastating blows at Hitler’s armies.
