In the centre of part 3 of Rohmer's "4 Seasons-Cycle" stands a young man, Gaspard, who went to Dinard (a town by the sea in the Bretagne) because he hopes to meet the girl he thinks he is in love with - Lena. Shortly after his arrival he comes into contact with Margot who works as a servant at her aunt's creperie. He spends a long time with her, and discusses the way he feels about Lena but he hesitates to tell the truth about his relationship. The reason is that he isn't quite sure himself. Although he insists he loves Lena, doubts arise…

Abel et Junon Vuillard forment un vieux couple très unis et encore amoureux l'un de l'autre malgré les épreuves de la vie. Suite à un malaise de Junon, les médecins lui diagnostiquent un lymphome présentant un très mauvais pronostic qui nécessite au plus vite une greffe de moelle osseuse. Leur premier enfant, Joseph, était mort très jeune à la fin des années 1960 de la même maladie sans qu'aucun traitement n'ait pu alors être entrepris et malgré la tentative d'avoir un troisième enfant, Henri, bébé médicament avant l'heure, permettant de trouver un donneur compatible puisque la petite sœur Elizabeth ne l'était pas. Après le décès de Joseph à six ans, le couple s'est toutefois retrouvé, restaurant un équilibre brisé par la perte de l'aîné, et faisant un dernier enfant Ivan, benjamin qui fut un peu fantasque à l'adolescence. Seule Elizabeth resta inconsolable de la perte de son frère aîné et inconsciemment haineuse vis-à-vis d'Henri qui n'avait pu le sauver.

(Abel and Junon Vuillard have two children – Joseph and Elizabeth. When their son is diagnosed with a rare life-threatening illness which only a bone-marrow transplant can cure, Abel and Junon have another child in the hope of saving him. Unfortunately, the new-born, Henri, is, like his sister, incompatible and Joseph dies. Years later, Elizabeth is a successful playwright whilst her brother Henri faces financial ruin as a result of some dodgy business dealings. Elizabeth agrees to bail Henri out on condition that he disappears from the family for good. A few years later, Junon discovers that she has the same illness that killed her first-born. Ironically, Henri is a viable donor who could save her life. Elizabeth’s unstable teenage son, Paul, takes the initiative and lures Henri back to his old home for what turns out to be an eventful Christmas family reunion…)
