Elegia was Paolo Conte's first proper studio album in nine years. At 67, no one could blame him if he decided to slow down a little. Yet, in the evidence of this fine album, it seems clear the reasons for such a delay had little to do with any lack of creativity. Instead, it was probably a consequence of Conte's growing international reputation (two acclaimed U.S. compilations, The Best of Paolo Conte and Reveries, were released during this period, and subsequently Conte added the U.S. to his already busy touring schedule), as well as the fulfillment of a lifelong ambition, the multimedia musical Razmataz. Elegia represents a return to the elegantly austere atmospheres of his 1987 masterpiece, Aguaplano, and stands in stark contrast to the luxurious orchestral trend of Conte's albums in the 1990s. In virtually every track, the spotlight is squarely on Conte's piano and voice. Gone are the extra vocalists or the full swing band numbers, and the horns and strings are subtly muted so as to offer a delicate accompaniment, rather than to lead the festivities. As its title suggests, Elegia is a pensive, longing album, one over which the shadow of Astor Piazzolla looms large — most obviously, of course, in "Il Regno del Tango," the best Conte tribute to Rio de la Plata music since his 1981's classic "Alle Prese con una Verde Milonga." Elegia, however, is neither somber nor mournful. This is because Conte's lyrics are back to their witty, compassionate best, reintroducing his familiar persona of half cynical nightclub performer and half incurably romantic buffoon. Nowhere is this better expressed than in the ineffable closer, "La Vecchia Giacca Nuova," where Conte's perennially down-and-out figure dignified only by the proud self-awareness of the spectacle of his own ridicule reaches new comic heights. Indeed, old fans and Italian speakers will find this album a true delight — for what a pleasure it is to listen to a full new set of bona fide Conte standards, such as "Sandwich Man" and "Bamboolah," after the immaculate yet somehow impersonal mannerist albums Una Faccia in Prestito and 900. It may be unfair to describe this album as a return to form, since all of Conte's efforts are possibly a class apart. Rather, Elegia is a back-to-the-roots album, a return to the very essence of what made Paolo Conte's music and persona so great in the first place.

Paolo Conte - Psiche

Paolo Conte - Psiche
Italian singer/songwriters | MP3 @192 kbps | Time: 0.50.26 | 70 MB
Genre: Jazz/Pop | Album Studio

Psiche is the 13th studio album of Paolo Conte's 35-year career. Not exactly prolific, the former lawyer from Asti built an outstanding body of work between 1974 and 1990, but recorded sporadically after that. Like João Gilberto or Jimmy Scott, Conte is one of those artists who very early on created a unique style and persona, and never strayed too far from with it. Psiche thus resembles all of Conte's releases since 1992's 900: a set of 15 unimpeachable new songs that perpetuate the myth of Paolo Conte, but add little to it. This is not necessarily a bad thing, and Psiche is indeed a fine album. True, some may write off this record as an exercise in style. Yet style has always been exactly Conte's forte, and no one can possibly deny that he has it in spades. Old themes and characters are revisited (the theater, dancing, bicycle racing, fascinating women, European culture, American swing) and set to Conte's trademark smoky jazz ballad treatment. Perhaps the most distinctive element of Psiche is the abundant use of synthesizer sounds ("Il Quadrato e il Cerchio," "Bella di Giorno," "Omicron"), particularly as it comes on the wake of the acoustic return-to-roots implied on Elegia, Conte's superb 2004 album. The results, if not as individually memorable as those of the preceding album, give Psiche a sonic identity of its own that grows with the record. He may be past 70 and starting to show in his voice, but Paolo Conte remains a class act.

Paolo Conte's music is hypnotic. Though I hardly understand a word of Italian, the combination of Conte's voice, rendition, melodies, and arrangement is spellbinding. My 12 year old son calls it 'deep music'. All in all, it is not as easy listening as 'Aquaplano' (one of Conte's albums) but ultimately at least as rewarding. The collection includes 'Sparring Partner' that my son and I played over and over during the first few weeks that we owned the CD. It was literally addictive. 'Via con me', 'Boogie', and the classic 'Max' are equally attractive. Other tracks, such as 'Ho ballato di tutto' require a bit more careful listening before they draw you in, and they will. This collection is a very good introduction to Paolo Conte's works. Highly recommended.

[From this exceptional event, of enormous historical and performative proportions, the documentary film "Paolo Conte alla Scala, The Maestro is in the soul" was born.
The historic concert is both its predominant fulcrum and a pretext to enter the soul of the Maestro, observe him behind the scenes and during rehearsals, and question him in his relationship with music and musicians, with words and his passions. The voice of today's Maestro then mixes with that of the young Paolo Conte, through repertoire images from the family archive that tell "under the stars of jazz, how much night has passed".

The Italian guitarist and bandleader Nicola Conte has recorded his first album for the legendary, recently re-established MPS records. Conte has brought with him his cosmic-cosmopolitan ensemble of stars which includes trumpeter Theo Croker, saxophonists Logan Richardson and Magnus Lindgren, and singer Zara McFarlane. For the most part recorded in Bari, Italy and Johannesburg, South Africa, it is a sensitive work of art that crosses the border between soul and spiritual Afro-jazz.Nicola Conte has cast his vision of cosmic jazz into a seamless tonal design – without restricting his players' freedom, leaving them open to the influences of the diverse cultures.
