By concentrating on his biggest straight country hits for Capitol and Dot Records ("Tips of My Fingers," "Yesterday, When I Was Young," "Thank God and Greyhound," "Come Live with Me") and sidestepping many of the novelty numbers that were associated with Hee-Haw, the 14-song Greatest Hits makes a case for Roy Clark's talents as songwriter and performer, providing a good introduction to his career.

No one could ever accuse Clark Terry of solemnity or detachment; his penchant for humor, especially his scat singing and "mumbles" routine, often triggered accusations of silliness. But Terry was an excellent modern trumpeter who perfected – among many other things – "dialogues" with himself, sometimes playing different instruments and other times alternating between mute and unmuted passages. His tone, range, and solo technique were superb, and he was equally proficient at swing or bebop. Terry worked in local groups around the St. Louis area, then was in a Navy band during World War II with Willie Smith.

Guy Clark didn't just write songs, he crafted them, with the kind of hands-on care and respect that a master carpenter (a favorite image of his) would when faced with a stack of rare hardwood. Clark worked slowly and with strict attention to detail – he released only 13 studio albums in his 40-year career – but he produced an impressive collection of timeless gems, leaving very little waste behind. His albums never met much commercial success, but the emotional level of his work consistently transcended sales figures and musical genres.
