At a late stage of composition, Meyerbeer changed the name of his opera L'Africaine to Vasco da Gama and completed it the day before his death in 1864. The Belgian musicologist and composer François-Joseph Fétis then made changes and created a performance version from the extensive score material, retaining the title L'Africaine, before the opera was premiered in April 1865. The plot revolves around the famous Portuguese navigator and a series of love entanglements depicted in a magnificent Grand Opéra.
