Wolf Valley is the new album from Norwegian pianist and composer Eyolf Dale. Although this is his fifth album as a leader since he burst onto the Norwegian scene in 2008, it was with Daniel Herskedal, the innovative tuba player, that Eyolf developed an international profile. He played on Daniel’s Edition release Slow Eastbound Train (2015) and now with Wolf Valley Eyolf Dale has brought together eight of the finest musicians from the vibrant Norwegian jazz scene to create an album of subtle grooves, beautiful melodies and rhythmic interplay.

A few symphonic works by Elgar, Vaughan Williams and Britten have found an established place in our German concert repertoire; violists also know William Walton’s concerto. Other composers of the British Isles, however, have remained unknown to the German public in spite of their prolific output: names such as York Bowen (1884-1961), Benjamin Dale (1885-1943) or Frank Bridge (1879-1941).

“Nocturne Serenity” is a welcome return for saxophonist/composer Dale Fielder and his Quartet featuring pianist Jane Getz. It is their first recording since 2019’s “Consensus.” The recording is also subtitled “Saxophone Standards Volume 2,” a follow-up to 2013’s “Saxophone Standards Volume 1,” Fielder’s ongoing life-long project of exploring the American jazz standard tradition. Since 2002, Fielder has primarily played the baritone saxophone. Even though he is photographed on the cover holding a baritone sax, he plays no baritone sax on this recording. Here he plays a strong, impassioned tenor sax on four of the seven tunes; soprano and alto on the remaining three tunes.
