Born in Mexico City, violist Dana Zemtsov has always retained a deep love for the colourful Latin-American culture. The discovery of Gabriel Garcia Marquez's book One Hundred Years of Solitude, in which the vivid literary images of clouds of yellow butterflies precede a forbidden lover's arrival, inspired Dana to revisit her earliest musical memories. This led to a unique project embodying the most characteristic expression of love in Latin-American culture: the beautiful boleros presented on this album entitled Yellow Butterfly. They are so well known that practically every Spanish-speaking person can sing them by heart. With arrangements by the legendary Joan Albert Amargos and Claudio Constantini, the recording conjures the surreal atmosphere of the Americas: melancholy, roughness, poetry, vitality and joy. These 'recomposed' boleros were arranged for solo viola and a small ensemble that consists of pianist Anna Fedorova, trumpeter Angelo Verploegen, bandoneonist Claudio Constantini, double bassist Nicholas Schwartz and percussionist Andre Groen.

We know Gabriel Fauré the composer well but little the pedagogue. This recording aims to highlight the influence of the composer in France and even in Europe when, in 1896, he became professor at the Paris conservatory taking over from Massenet. The program of this disc wishes to bring together one of the work of his last périod and compositions by his illustrious students: Ravel, Boulanger et Enesco.

Stravinsky suffered from the First World War and its consequences for Europe; Bartok spoke out before and during the Second World War against the nationalist mood in twentieth-century Europe; Bartok’s friend and colleague, the Hungarian violinist Joseph Szigeti, to whom he dedicated his Contrasts trio, had to flee Hungary for the USA in 1939 on account of the dangerous antisemitic climate in the country.

This program is quite wonderful in the sense that it is overflowing with musical gems for the viola, all composed in the Netherlands in the 20th century. It is not common, for example, to hear the Concerto or the sumptuous and lyrical Sonata by Henk Badings, despite being an important figure in Dutch modernity (1907-1987). It is even more gratifying to think that the present works and their four composers (there are also Arne Werkman, Jan Koetsier and Henriette Bosmans) live in the obscurity of Dutch musical life and rarely attract the attention of soloists and orchestras. . And yet, these works highlight a beautiful solo instrument, the viola, which is not at all considered the prima donna of the stage, and which generally occupies a discreet place as the middle voice in the orchestra or the string quartet. This program designed by Dana Zemtsov (regular artist of the Dutch label, with always daring programs) presents the first recording of the Concertino for viola and orchestra.
