The winner of the 1970 Eurovision Song Contest, where she represented her homeland, Ireland, singer Dana was born Rosemary Brown in Islington, London, on August 30, 1951. Her family had relocated to the U.K. the previous year from their home in Derry, Northern Ireland, and they returned there when Dana was five. The following year, the little girl won the first of many talent contests and, shortly before her 16th birthday, she was signed to the Decca label's Rex subsidiary.
Dana Dawson skillfully balanced a musical career with work as an actor. Making her theatrical debut at the age of seven with a national touring production of Annie, she joined the national tour of Rent in October 2000. She continued to perform in the musical show when it made its Broadway premiere in August 2001. Dawson was equally successful as a vocalist, releasing her debut album, Paris, New York and Me, in 1991. Her second album, Black Butterfly, released during the summer of 1996, included the dance hit "3 Is Family." Released in England, her 2001 single, "Nice Life," was featured on the soundtrack of the Disney Channel show Lizzie McGuire.
It is a crime that these pieces are not better known. They are extraordinary, of great depth, truly beautiful, and highly addictive. That's all I have to say. Great music performed with gusto. Classical training and virtuosity is self evident. I enjoyed this CD very much. Composer and lyricist Dana Suesse was a child prodigy, giving her first concert, a Rachmaninoff prelude, at the age of nine. At 16 she moved to New York and began composing songs.
Although Dana Gillespie is probably best known for her early-'70s spell among David Bowie's most visible cohorts, her own career dates back almost as far as Bowie's himself, with the pair even sharing a record label (Decca) and producer (Mike Vernon) during the late '60s. Whereas Bowie was more intent on aping Anthony Newley and the English music hall traditions, however, Gillespie was turning in an album that stands as the missing link between period Marianne Faithfull and future Elastica.
