It’s about time BGP got seriously funky and over the next few months we will be serving up some fantastic collections of rare funk and groovy soul from the depths of the black American recording industry. In the last decade funk has gone from the forgotten cousin of soul to the genre that has been most quickly excavated and then sometimes discarded. It often seems that every rare record has been snapped up and compiled already (it’s not true but sometimes it seems like it). However, the Ace collective really does have the ability to go deeper; as with the world of rare soul, our access to the tape vaults of various companies allows us to bring the world some exceptional music that has never been heard since the day it was recorded. “Street Sounds From The Bay Area” is the result of our examination of the recordings made, and then on the whole not released, by Ray Dobard’s Music City outfit between 1971 and 1975.

Our label Speakeasy is proud to unveil this 7th volume of its compilation series. A long journey of more than 3 hours of music. This is our tribute to pay respect to the Soul brothers from the past and today. Thank you to all the producers for delivering their unique touch with edit, rework or remix in different style like funk, reggae, hiphop or even drum & bass.

Above the album worked the Wagram Music 'Funk Greatest Hits ', and his release took place on 2019. The album has got 30 songs with a total duration of more than an hour. A compilation is a compilation of original music.

A composer of film, TV, and game music, indie soul songs, and funk-fueled electronica, producer/multi-instrumentalist Shawn Lee embarked on his eclectic career in music in the late '80s, completing his first solo LP in 1996, though it never received an official release. In the 2000s, he found homes for his solo material on labels such as Ubiquity and Wall of Sound and formed Shawn Lee's Ping Pong Orchestra. He also released albums with Clutchy Hopkins, and began taking work composing scores, including for the video game Bully (2006). The Ping Pong Orchestra continued into the 2010s as Lee formed psychedelic soul group the Electric Peanut Butter Company with Adrian Quesada and the indie electronic duo AM & Shawn Lee. Meanwhile, highlights of his periodic score work included the documentaries Elevate (2011) and Let It Soul (2018).

Ray Dobard’s Music City Records of Berkeley, California, across the Bay from San Francisco, is a catalogue of mythic proportions that has been cherished for decades by a small hardcore of R&B, vocal group and, latterly, soul fanatics. Based on the available evidence – 50-odd 45 and 78rpm releases – and a lot of hearsay and rumour, many have spent hours fantasising about the purported riches in the possession of its famously protective, zealous owner.

In the foreground a woman wanders with phlegm and casualness. Afro cut, long dress and leather jacket. Around her everything breathes soul music. Even before we put our heads on the vinyl sulphate, this pochette takes us to the heart of the 60s, the climax of this "music of the soul" born between Memphis and Detroit and then offered to the whole world. This opus Soul from the "Wanted" collection holds all its promises, nourishing our curiosity of nuggets finely chosen and unknown to the general public that all lovers of music will appreciate. From Dee Edwards' energetic Deep Soul, to Brenda George's Nothern Soul, to Millie Jackson's 70's languorous soul, the whole genre is reviewed. Enough to satisfy the most demanding ears, but also the neophytes of the genre.

Shawn Lee is one of the most prolific musicians of his generation. A multi-instrumentalist, producer, singer songwriter, composer and Radio DJ, he has released 35 albums as an artist to date. He has played, produced and written on hundreds of records. He has worked with a diverse range of artists including Jeff Buckley, Kelis, Saint Etienne, Money Mark, Amy Winehouse, Jonathan Jeremiah, Darondo, Adrian Younge, Tony Joe White, Robbie Williams, Incognito and Princess Superstar to name just a few.
